JOB DESCRIPTION

Position: Bus Drivers (up to 3 positions available)

Time Schedule: 9 -12 months

Salary Rate or Ratio: Hourly

Reports to: Director of Transportation & Custodial Services

Employment Status: Classified - Regular/Full-time

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Description: Safely transport students to and from school and all school related events; comply with federal and state laws, and board of education rules and mandates that pertain to school bus drivers.

Probationary Period: 120 Days

Qualifications:High school diploma or GEDPossess and maintain a valid State of Ohio Class B commercial drivers license (CDL) school bus endorsementMust pass annual medical physicalMust complete bus driver recertification every six years as required by state lawRequired to pass random drug and alcohol testingPass BCI background checkSuch alternatives to the above qualifications as the Supervisor and/or Board of Education may find appropriateRequired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ensure safety of studentsTransport students safely and efficiently to and from school and school related eventsFollow assigned bus routes and schedulesMaintain required records and informationPerform pre-trip and post-trip inspections as required and report problemsKeep assigned bus neat and cleanMaintain up-to-date knowledge and awareness of changes in driving laws as they apply to transporting school childrenObey all traffic lawsObserve all mandatory safety regulations for school busesMaintain pupil control and report any violations to the proper authorities as prescribedNotify the transportation director and mechanics in case of mechanical failure or latenessDischarge students only at authorized stopsReport all accidents and complete required reportsReport any hazardous conditions along the existing route to the transportation supervisorAttend bus driver meetings and be available in the event of emergency dismissalNotify the transportation supervisor in case of illness in order to permit time to secure a substitute driverConduct front door, rear door and combination front and rear door emergency evacuation drillsPrepare reports, route maps, schedules, pupil lists, and accident reports as requiredMake contacts with the public with tact and diplomacyMaintain respect at all times for confidential informationInteract in a positive manner with staff, students and parentsAttend meetings and in-services as requiredImmediately report any change in driving status, traffic charges or convictions and criminal charges and convictions to employerPromote good public relationsSuch alternatives to the above essential functions as the Supervisor and/or Board of Education may find appropriateOther Duties and Responsibilities:

Warm up the engine gradually in cold weatherExercise responsible leadership when on out-of-district school tripsMaintains records of fuel, oil usage and mileageMakes detours on routes when neededOccasional requirement to lift students and push wheel chairsOccasional requirement to transport students to emergency evacuation locationsFill out incident reports regarding code of student behavior violationsConduct school bus safety program for all bus students grades K-3 during the first 3 weeks of school as required by state lawMay be asked to participate in discipline meetings with school personnelTraining to recognize signs of abuse or neglect and the signs of drug or alcohol abuseFollow rules as outlined in the driver's manualPerform other duties as assigned by the Transportation SupervisorEquipment Operated:

BusOther passenger vehicles legal for the transportation of studentsRefueling equipmentPressure washerSafety equipment on bus (fire extinguisher)Wheelchair lift and wheelchair securement devicesMobile communication devices (Example: two way radio)Required safety equipment found on school vehiclesFirst aid kit and body fluid kitVarious handheld items, e.g. tire iron, oil can, flares, broom, dustpan, flashlight, squeegeeAdditional Working Conditions:

Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissueAbility to operate the bus or vehicle in inclement weather conditionsFrequent interaction with unruly childrenOccasional requirement to lift and carry bus supplies up to a maximum of 65 poundsOccasional requirement to push and pull up to a maximum of 300 pounds (on wheels)Requirement to climb, steps on bus and to check bus fluids, through bus back emergency door, bumpers to adjust mirrors or clean windshieldStooping, kneeling and crouching during inspectionsRequirement to balance when adjusting side mirrorsExtensive sitting, up to two hours at a timeExposure to high levels of noiseRepetitive hand motionOccasional requirement to carry bus students in an emergency evacuationExposure to various fumes, i.e., carbon monoxide and diesel fuelFrequently move around workspace and travel throughout school buildingFrequently move and position self as necessary to access and operate equipmentEmployee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance, use in the work place throughout his/her employment with the District.
