Overview of Position:

We are hiring a Public Benefits Staff Attorney to represent clients in all stages of the application process for public benefits (SSDI/SSI appeals and others), support workers filing claims in small claims court and represent some clients at employment-related administrative agency hearings. This will be a full-time position designed to expand the capacity of our employment and public benefits team.

Responsibilities:

Embody our mission of universal access to civil legal aid and make sure that the needs of clients in our service area are met.

Own 35-45 cases which are in the administrative law process or small claims and be responsible for making sure the clients’ goals are met.

Take responsibility for owning all our public benefit cases and doing the intakes.

Represent clients at various stages of the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) processes.

Be the case manager for our small claims cases, using the People Clerk software for the paperwork.

Be available at least twice a month after hours, in-office, to staff pro bono clinics.

Be responsible for the public benefits casework and clients, including making case opening decisions.

Physically be able to go to SF Superior Court to deliver courtesy copies, and/or pick up orders, if needed.

Appear in administrative hearings representing clients up to 2 times a month for any litigation matters, as needed.

Support our Employment Law team with other tasks and casework as department needs fluctuate.

Provide trauma-informed legal services and help clients stay updated on their case.

Gain and maintain proficient knowledge of public benefit law and employment law.

Attend trainings, review solutions, engage in casework, and discuss case strategy with your supervisor.

Commit to leading the office in representing our mission and values.

Requirements:

Membership in good standing with the California State Bar.

Knowledge of California public benefits and experience representing clients at administrative law hearings.

Excellent writing and oral advocacy skills.

Strong time management skills.

Dogged perseverance in the face of bureaucratic barriers.

Willingness to work a flexible schedule.

Comfort learning and using technology and cloud-based case management systems.

Must genuinely enjoy working with low-income clients.

Must demonstrate cultural humility and sensitivity.

Minimal to light physical effort is generally required in performing duties in an office environment.

Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.

Bonus Points:

Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Bilingual in English and Cantonese.

Previous experience in a legal environment.

Experience working with low-income and vulnerable populations.

Experience working in a high-volume legal aid or similar environment.

Having lived a significant period of your life in San Francisco proper.

Starting compensation is $77,500 - $93,500 annually based on experience.
