Position Description

Job Summary

The Life Science R&D group at Saint-Gobain Research (SGR) North America is looking for a driven, talented, and experienced researcher specializing in polymeric fibers to lead and execute the efforts to design/develop polymer fiber solutions and deliver textile products within our ambitious timeline. The ideal candidate will have deep knowledge and experience in fiber science and engineering, braiding technology, and advanced characterization techniques on fibers. The candidate should enjoy learning new technologies, problem solving, and designing innovative and sustainable solutions as part of a diverse worldwide team.Under the direction of the Global R&D manager, the candidate will identify/test new polymeric fiber materials, design the fiber formulations, optimize the chemical composition, produce lab scale samples, guide the characterization and testing, support pilot scale trials and scale-up trials. The candidate should demonstrate an open and collaborative approach in all areas of responsibility and seeks out others to enhance and streamline development and decision making.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Conduct research and development projects, and work with multidisciplinary team in developing innovative new technologies on polymeric fibers.Lead the fiber/textile research involving chemistry, formulation, braiding, and technology development for new product innovations to meet specific functional requirements and performance standards.Identify, develop and implement new materials solutions of polymeric fibers, and perform in-depth characterization and testing on the strength, thermomechanical property, flexibility and durability.Proactively explore and integrate scientific literature to develop hypotheses and experimental designs aimed at advancing our understanding of fiber development, while collaborating with team members.Collaborate effectively within cross-functional project teams, and support technology transfer and scale-up efforts to the production team. Provide technical expertise and support to production teams for process optimization and troubleshooting.Stay current with industry trends and advancements in fiber technology, and interact with customers and key strategic partners (including external partners, universities, national labs and suppliers) to drive innovation and competitive advantage.Maintain a high level of organization and record-keeping, ensuring accurate documentation of experimental procedures and results. Maintain on-time and accurate reporting of deliverables to stakeholders globally.Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and draw actionable conclusions.Demonstrated technical judgement/accomplishments, project leadership, team collaboration, and both verbal and written communications skills.Flexible interpersonal skills, collaborative nature and commitment to innovation.Self-motivated with ability to prioritize goals and objective with minimum supervision.Document accomplishments in clear and coherent technical reports and presentations.In-depth understanding of the structure-property relationships of fibers to enable new product development to achieve the specific functional performance.Required Qualifications

BS Degree with a minimum of 12+ years’ experience, or MS with 7+ years of experience or PhD with 3+ years of experience in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical engineering, Textile Engineering or a related field.Expertise and experience on polymeric fibers (polymer chemistry, formulation, processing, etc.).Knowledge of fiber processing techniques and characterization required.
