The company’s mission is to revolutionize the premium cataract surgery experience by allowing surgeons to partner with their patients to achieve optimized results for every unique eye.OVERVIEW:Reporting to VP of LAL Chemistry, Materials Scientist will be responsible for leading the development of silicone-based formulations for adjustable lens technology as well as advancing understanding and characterization techniques of silicone raw materials. Key responsibilities will include formulation characterization, optimization and development, as well as synthesis of new materials for the next generation of the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL)ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Design, development, and extensive characterization of silicone-based polymer resinsOptimization of silicone material selection process to enhance the scale and quality of the LALAnalysis of silicone raw materials, intermediate formulation mixes and final formulations using conventional soft materials characterization techniques: GPC, rheology, spectroscopy: NMR, UV-Vis and Raman, thermal characterization techniques: DSC, DMA, TGA, proficiency in mechanical characterization: Universal Tester and DurometerAnalysis of formulation mixes and resulting lenses by electron microscopy techniques: SEM and TEM as well as AFM and STMSynthesis of silicone-based and silicone-containing monomers and polymers utilizing various polymerization techniques: ring-opening, cationic, anionic, and controlled radical polymerizationsRequirementsREQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:Strong background in polymer chemistry/organic materials science is a mustIn depth knowledge of polymeric materials characterization techniques: GPC, NMR, optical and thermal analysisProficiency in polymer microscopy: SEM, TEM, AFM, STM and corresponding sample preparationExperience with formulation development and optimizationGeneral familiarity with molecular simulation tools and polymer analyticsCreative technical skills that lead to innovative approaches to the development process.Effective analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to apply creative solutions to challengesSUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:NoneEDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, and TRAINING:Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Materials Science (soft materials), Polymer Chemistry or Polymer Engineering3-5 years of relevant work experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.Strong preference for a minimum of 2 years in medical devices industry where polymer chemistry is a critical element essential in the productTraining to be completed per the training plan for this position as maintained in the document control systemThe training requirements on TRN-10007 Insider Trading Policy, TRN-10008 Global Anti-Bribery and Anti-Corruption Policy and TRN-10009 Code of Business Conducts and Ethics must be diligently completed within 30 days from the hiring date and on an annual basisCERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:NoneCOMPUTER SKILLS:MS OfficeSpreadsheet SoftwareLaboratory Information Management System
