Network/Security Architect

The Network/Security Architect serves as a lead network/security/IoT architect at the University for Information Technology Services for security of Infrastructure (networks, firewalls, Microsoft Office 365, VPN’s, Internet, systems, communications, door locks, cameras, web services, monitoring, compliance, etc.) and Administrative (SIS, monitoring, logging, reporting, etc.) services provided by IT Services. Works with IT Services management and other stakeholders to gather requirements, design, implement, maintain the security and network related infrastructure of the organization according to industry best practices. Serves as a senior level administrator for centralized systems and networks using advanced technologies to deploy and monitor IT services and respond to security incidents.

Essential Duties Include:Performs risk assessment, audits, and security monitoring functions for Penn West networks and systems.Administers related systems to perform intrusion detection/prevention, packet monitoring, file/database integrity assessments, vulnerability assessments, and incident tracking.Monitors security systems, analyzes security logs, and responds promptly to security incidents, conducting thorough investigations and implementing remediation measures.Works with management, legal counsel, and law enforcement to respond to security incidents and requests for data/right-to-know.Reviews changes to firewall/network/and other infrastructure and approves or denies them.Designs and architects secure network, security, and IoT infrastructure, including switches, routers, access points, firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention systems, VPNs, door locks, cameras, card systems, NAC, monitoring, compliance, EDR, and other security technologies.Develops and implements security strategies, compliance strategies, policies, and procedures to protect the organization’s network infrastructure, systems, and data from internal and external threats.Evaluates and selects network, security, and IoT products and technologies and provides guidance on their integration into the existing network infrastructure.Leads meetings with internal stakeholders to gather requirements, works with vendors to design solutions, obtains quotes as needed, and then works with procurement to develop RFP/Bid documents to purchase solutions.Documents solutions and communicates effectively with supervisors.Administers IT security and network practices for the university – auditing existing systems, firewalls, Microsoft Office 365, and networks, providing detailed security consulting to system and network administrators of existing systems, and working with the technology committees to develop, document, and maintain security policies and procedures.Performs senior-level system and network administration for large-scale infrastructure systems.Develops and maintains advanced, senior-level knowledge of technologies and methods utilized by IT Services.Serves as the primary IT Services consultant for IT network, security, and IoT implementations of new technical projects.Completes independent studies, attends training courses, reads pertinent industry publications, and participates in related electronic forums to stay current with new technologies, business processes, and regulatory matters.Provides training/mentorship for lower-level network/security employees when necessary.

Required Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:Senior analyst level understanding of network protocols, IT Security, and operating systems.Ability to independently research, deploy, and administer advanced hardware and software for security assessments dealing with very low-level technical details.Ability to judge the nature and severity of an event and take appropriate action.Understanding of laws and the legal system; including handling of evidence.Detailed knowledge of best practices for network/security/IoT design.Up-to-date knowledge of compliance mandates required by the University, and ability to factor them into network/security design.Detailed knowledge of effective system and network administration practices and related auditing tools.Ability to effectively communicate security issues to audiences with varied technical backgrounds.

Minimum of Education / Training Required:B.S. Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or related technical field.Minimum of seven years of IT experience using a variety of systems and tools with a demonstrated increase in levels of responsibility.

Preferred Qualifications:CISSP (Certification for Information System Security Professional) desired but not required. If applicant does not have the CISSP, applicant must be eligible to sit for the exam.
