UM BWMC features one of the state’s busiest emergency departments, as well as a team of experts who care for our community and one another.General SummaryThis role has primary responsibility for creating an overall culture of high performance and continuous improvement and innovation at the organization. Operationalizes culture through performance outcomes and ensures the necessary infrastructure and resources are aligned to meet outcomes. Leads high-leverage improvement projects, provides coaching, and supervises the work and priorities for performance improvement facilitators. Develops and executes an effective performance improvement (PI) program aligned with strategic priorities.MissionAll employees are responsible for extending the mission and values of Baltimore Washington Medical Center by dedicating oneself to providing the highest quality healthcare services to the communities we serve.Reporting RelationshipsReports to the President and CEO of UM BWMC.ResponsibilitiesShared accountability with executive leaders for performance outcomes.Partner with senior leaders to ensure that the Performance Improvement program contributes meaningfully to achieving the desired outcomes by developing, executing, and monitoring a PI strategy.Liaison with UMMS Corporate and system-wide Performance Improvement peers.Ensure innovative organizational deployment and management of PI resources.HIGH RELIABILITYServe as the Implementation Lead for UM BWMC’s HRO Journey.Liaison with University of Maryland Medical System Corporate office to assure alignment with system HRO activities.Facilitate the HRO Guiding Team with the CEO to oversee HRO training, Learning Area Deployment, Senior Leader Rounding, SCORE Survey follow-up, and priority improvement initiatives.DATA REVIEW AND ANALYSISUtilizes standard reports and dashboards to review performance data and identify opportunities for improvement.Facilitates the identification and monitoring of cascading metrics from AOP level outcomes down to unit level process indicators.Utilizes statistical analysis and data visualization to draw conclusions on the efficacy of improvement projects.Identifies opportunities to streamline care and quality of care issues and reports to appropriate committees, department heads, etc. for action planning.COMPARISON TO NATIONAL OR STATE DATABASEIdentifies appropriate national and state databases for comparison of hospital data.Participates in study designs that allow hospital participation in state/federal or professional organization studies.MANAGEMENT AND COACHING OF IMPROVEMENT TEAMSSupervise improvement personnel, on a day-to-day basis, ensuring that they have the resources and support to carry out assigned projects.Understand and leverage the deployment of improvement facilitators throughout the organization.Design and execute an education program to develop the performance improvement skills of UM BWMC personnel.Select candidates for wave training and ensure oversight.Personally support, through direct involvement, several (3 to 6) strategic PI projects that are complex, highly visible, and/or of high dollar value.Present projects that have the potential for spread throughout UMMS to the appropriate leaders.Productively identifies opportunities for improvement.Researches best practices to common improvement needs.Participates on teams focused on hospital and system-wide initiatives, as designated.QualificationsMaster’s degree in Business Administration, Organizational Nursing Informatics, Statistics, or similar degree required. Research background with understanding of statistical testing required. Lean/Six Sigma certification or equivalent experience preferred. Three (3) years of progressive leadership and/or management position required. Five (5) years’ experience training and facilitating process improvement projects required. Five (5) years hands-on experience with process improvement methodologies to include: Value Stream Management tools; A3; Kaizen methods; standardized work; and other key Lean tools and methodologies.Experience using a business office suite, such as Microsoft Office, is required. Must have strong organizational skills and be able to manage multiple projects at once. Able to work in a team-oriented environment and comfortable with matrix management of projects. Strong interpersonal and listening skills. Must be comfortable giving presentations to various levels of stakeholders.All your information will be kept confidential according to EEO guidelines.
