GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The PSPU Staff Nurse is a registered nurse who is responsible for assuring competent, compassionate nursing care for specific patients and families. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, pre-procedural assessment, administration of moderate sedation, hemodynamic monitoring during diagnostic and interventional procedures, and post-procedural recovery and teaching. The staff nurse serves as a resource to support staff and is accountable for the overall nursing care management of a designated group of patients. The PSPU staff nurse collaborates with the Nurse Manager and members of the Patient Care Team to achieve optimal patient outcomes.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides competent, compassionate nursing care based on scientific principles and the use of nursing process and a primary nursing model.

Provides and maintains a therapeutic environment for patients and families.Articulates the role of the PSPU staff nurse to the patient, family and health team members.Provides expert patient care throughout the entire procedural process, from pre-procedural assessment, intra-procedure monitoring and sedation administration, to post-procedure recovery.Identifies, facilitates, and evaluates outcomes of nursing care for an individual patient or group of patients, utilizing the nursing process.Coordinates involvement of the patient, family and health team members in patient care including patient/family teaching and discharge planning.Documents relevant patient information.Communicates the plan of care and other pertinent information to/from other health team members.Helps define standards of excellence for patient care; participates in improvement of patient care services in a cost-effective manner.Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide direct nursing care with consideration of the aging process, human developmental stages, and cultural patterns.Collaborates with other professionals and directs nonprofessional nursing personnel in maintaining recognized standards.Teaches and directs all nursing/non-nursing personnel for whom she/he is responsible.Participates in orientation of new permanent and temporary staff members.Appropriately utilizes nursing resources.Interprets hospital and departmental policies and procedures to nurses and other health team members.Participates in daily operational activities necessary for safe patient/staff environment.Utilizes resources efficiently to facilitate optimal patient care.Rotates into the role of resource nurse after 6 months in the department, helping to coordinate same day and inpatient procedures.Performs patient and health care team phone calls along with additional calls as directed by the Nurse Manager.Collaborates with physicians to ensure appropriate scheduling of same-day procedures.Maintains and troubleshoots all equipment.Maintains supply inventory list and orders all supplies for the unit. Stocks rooms and maintains appropriate par levels.Participates in unit and departmental committees for formulation of nursing and hospital policies and procedures.Performs miscellaneous tasks to help maintain an efficient workflow throughout the unit as needed.Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills based on current nursing education practices.Identifies own learning needs and goals and develops a plan to meet them.Maintains and develops professional practice through continuing educational programs and appropriate learning experiences.Contributes to relevant committees, professional meetings, continuing educational and/or formal academic programs.

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

IV PlacementPhlebotomy/EKGMedication administration, including moderate sedationTelemetryPre-procedure set-up and equipment preparationPost-procedure patient recoveryStocking and cleaning procedure roomsOrdering all supplies for the unit via Ebuy through PeoplesoftCollection and preparation of specimen samples.Assists Interventional Pulmonologist for various procedures.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or REGISTRATIONS:

Current Massachusetts licensure as a registered nurse. BSN required.Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications.2-3 years ICU, critical care, ED, or procedural experience required.Demonstrates clinical competence in the area of nursing practice predominant on the unit. Strong clinical background in pulmonology preferred.Completes competencies for Critical Care Orientation including successful completion of conscious sedation program administered by the Department of Anesthesia.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Hospital procedural setting with both inpatient and outpatient volume. Exposure to some radiation during fluoroscopy procedures. Exposure to blood, waste products, and contagious diseases. Fast-paced, high-acuity patient care environment. Risk of needle sticks and exposure to airborne diseases (i.e., tuberculosis).#J-18808-Ljbffr
