Job Description - Staff Nurse, Interventional Pulmonary (3304076)The PSPU Staff Nurse is a registered nurse responsible for assuring competent, compassionate nursing care for specific patients and families. Responsibilities include pre-procedural assessment, administration of moderate sedation, hemodynamic monitoring during diagnostic and interventional procedures, and post-procedural recovery and teaching. The staff nurse serves as a resource to support staff and is accountable for the overall nursing care management of a designated group of patients. The staff nurse collaborates with the Nurse Manager and members of the Patient Care Team to achieve optimal patient outcomes.PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides competent, compassionate nursing care based on scientific principles and the use of nursing process and a primary nursing model.Maintains a therapeutic environment for patients and families.Articulates the role of the PSPU staff nurse to the patient, family, and health team members.Provides expert patient care throughout the entire procedural process, from pre-procedural assessment to post-procedure recovery.Identifies, facilitates, and evaluates outcomes of nursing care for individual patients or groups, utilizing the nursing process.Coordinates involvement of the patient, family, and health team members in patient care, including teaching and discharge planning.Communicates the plan of care and pertinent information to/from other health team members.Helps define standards of excellence for patient care; participates in improvement of patient care services.Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide direct nursing care considering the aging process, developmental stages, and cultural patterns.Collaborates with other professionals and directs nonprofessional nursing personnel in maintaining recognized standards.Participates in daily operational activities necessary for a safe patient/staff environment.Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills based on current nursing education practices.SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

Pre-procedure set-up and equipment preparation.Assists Interventional Pulmonologist in various procedures, including but not limited to:Flexible bronchoscopy w/wo biopsies and brushingsBronchothermoplastyRigid BronchoscopyEndobronchial laser therapyFluoroscopyChest tube placementPercutaneous tracheostomyPEG placementBlood TransfusionLICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or REGISTRATIONS:

Current Massachusetts licensure as a registered nurse. BSN required.Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications.2-3 years ICU, critical care, ED, or procedural experience required.Strong clinical background in pulmonology preferred.WORKING CONDITIONS:

Hospital procedural setting with both inpatient and outpatient volume. Exposure to some radiation during fluoroscopy procedures, blood, waste products, and contagious diseases. Fast-paced, high-acuity patient care environment with risk of needle sticks and exposure to airborne diseases (e.g., tuberculosis).Massachusetts General Hospital is an Affirmative Action Employer.
