Created in 2015 by Women of Color, ELSO, Inc. provides culturally relevant education and leadership development opportunities that invite Youth of Color to Experience Life Science Outdoors (ELSO). Our mission is to teach and frame science and nature-based education through a lens that centers and elevates the stories, ways of knowing, individual needs, and lived experiences of Black and Brown communities.

ELSO seeks to reduce the achievement gap in STEAMED (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math, Environment, Design) education and professions while creating a sense of belonging for Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPoC) in the natural and built environments. ELSO uses a multi-cultural approach to STEAMED education that is rooted in environmental justice and cultural history.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The role of the Storytelling and Communications Coordinator is to capture the highlights, milestones, and experiences of the ELSO Inc. organization and leverage them for promotional use and awareness for stakeholders and various target audiences. They work closely with program directors and upper management to address communication needs and strategize communication plans accordingly. This role includes creating communication campaign deliverables, objectives, and timelines, while providing instructions for promotion or use, and executing plans. Additionally, this role maintains an inventory of marketing materials for promotion and creates new marketing materials and strategies for communication as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Storytelling & Communications (60%)

Champion overhaul and revamp of ELSO website, owning maintenance of domain from end-to-end.

Streamline communication channels to establish uniform messaging and brand identity.

Create graphics and produce visual materials for the organization website leading to launch.

Manage organization’s website & event calendar to share with various audience groups.

Develop social media strategy and implement social media editorial calendar and plan.

Create graphics, brand guidelines, and editorial calendars to ensure the production of consistent and cohesive organizational messaging.

Write copy for organizational newsletters or memos following brand guidelines.

Community Engagement & Program Support (20%)

Align with program directors to promote STEAM learning opportunities and develop standardized registration processes.

Coordinate with specific parties to come up with new marketing materials and resources.

Responsible for community outreach engagement through various communication outlets.

Fundraising & Development (20%)

Support with planning and execution of fundraising campaigns and events.

Create graphics, weekly posts, stories, and newsletters for campaigns.

Collaborate with fundraising team and organizational staff to develop Impact Report applied to donor engagement.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

21+ High School Graduate, or GED complete, can be current college, with design experience.

Must be able to pass a background check as required by the Oregon Department of Education for positions that work directly with youth.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s Degree.

Marketing/Communication Background.

Proficient with marketing-related software programs.
