POSITION DETAILS

Salary Range: $45,000- $75,000

Hours: Full Time - 40 hr/ week

Expected Start Date: 09/01/2022

Reports to: Executive Director

Created in 2015 by Women of Color, ELSO, Inc. provides culturally relevant education and leadership development opportunities that invite Youth of Color to Experience Life Science Outdoors (ELSO). Our mission is to teach and frame science and nature-based education through a lens that centers and elevates the stories, ways of knowing, individual needs, and lived experiences of Black and Brown communities. ELSO seeks to reduce the achievement gap in STEAMED (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math, Environment, Design) education and professions while creating a sense of belonging for Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPoC) in the natural and built environments.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The role of the Communications Manager is to capture the highlights, milestones, and experiences of the ELSO Inc. organization and leverage them for promotional use and awareness for stakeholders and various target audiences. They work closely with program directors and upper management to address communication needs and strategize communication plans accordingly. This role includes coming up with communication campaign deliverables, objectives, and timelines while providing instructions for promotion or use and executing plans. Additionally, the Communications Manager carries out marketing campaigns and supports programs and management in marketing efforts. Their duties include creating marketing campaign content like graphics and newsletters, managing and moderating social media accounts, and supporting promotional event campaigns.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Storytelling & Communications (60%)

Website

Manage organization’s website & event calendar to share with various audience groups.

Responsible for regular review and maintenance of website, including supervising and directing sub-contractors and freelance web designers.

Streamline communication channels to establish uniform messaging and brand identity.

Responsible for supervision and management of design contractors in order to create graphics and produce visual materials for the organization website.

Gather assets and coordinate with photographers and staff to produce updated headshots and bios of team and consulting services.

Responsible for leading the annual Dev-Comm Staff Planning Retreat sessions on communications.

Social Media

Develop social media strategy and lead the implementation of social media editorial calendar and plan.

Develop brand Social Media content and implement key messaging strategies through racial equity lenses.

Create graphics, brand guidelines, and editorial calendars to ensure the production of consistent and cohesive organizational messaging.

Responsible for publishing camp advertising info/registration for various ELSO programs/events.

Video, Photography, Media Coverage

Lead the development of creating the storyline, messaging, and outline of storytelling video projects.

Supervise and direct subcontractors, including coordinating with videographers/photographers to capture photos and footage from programs and events.

Present materials to various audiences through multiple channels.

Compile Interview Panel, media requests and releases, production team to produce ELSO videos.

Anticipate and schedule media coverage opportunities with funders/partners to craft stories around the organization’s agenda and accomplishments.

Newsletter and Communications

Collaborate with E.D. to outline regular newsletters and write copy for organizational newsletters.

Responsible for implementation of the organization brand guidelines and shared language.

Regularly update the Shared Language and implement across the organization.

Create newsletters, E Blasts, announcements via Constant Contacts/Neon CRM.

Develop media relations with external organizations to obtain media and press coverage.

Design

Responsible for curating collateral including: Brochures, T-Shirts, Logos, Swag Bags, Business Cards, Postcards, Envelopes, Banners.

Community Engagement & Program Support (20%)

Align with program directors to promote STEAM learning opportunities and develop standardized registration processes.

Create and maintain inventory of marketing materials and sharing out instructions on how to use accordingly.

Coordinate with specific parties to come up with new marketing materials and resources.

Visit event sites for collecting content relating to programs and camp sessions.

Establish cooperative relationships with programming staff, project management, and grants management team.

Anticipate and schedule media coverage opportunities with funders to maintain favorable public and stakeholder views of the organization’s agenda and accomplishments.

Responsible for community outreach engagement through various communication outlets.

Fundraising & Development (20%)

Support with planning and execution of fundraising campaigns.

Support with strategy planning for promotional campaigns and donor engagement.

Create graphics, weekly posts, stories, and newsletters for campaigns.

Collaborate with the Donor Relations Manager to develop fundraising promotional materials.

Events

Design and lead planning, implementation, and production of fundraising events including vendor relationships, budgets, and event logistics.

Collaborate with Donor Relations Manager to secure sponsors, in-kind donations, and raffle items for fundraising events.

Supervise the Events Intern in managing the logistics of fundraising events.

Teamwork

Coordinate vendors with camp staff and ELSO staff team as necessary.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

21+ High School Graduate, or GED complete, can be current college student with design experience.

Must be able to pass a background check as required by the Oregon Department of Education for positions that work directly with youth.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s Degree.

2 years experience in marketing and communications.

Marketing/Communication Background.

Proficient with marketing-related software programs.

ELSO will supply all office essentials (computer, mouse, keyboard, printer, pens, paper, etc.) to staff working from a home office as well as subscriptions to required software.

This is a remote position.
