The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is recruiting for an Associate Director (AD) for the Cancer Imaging Program (CIP). This is a full-time government position in Rockville, Maryland.

This position will serve as the AD within the Office of the Associate Director (OAD), CIP. The AD of CIP serves as the primary NCI official responsible for research, education, and coordination of activities related to oncologic imaging for the extramural NCI community. This involves planning, conduct, coordination, and evaluation of national and international laboratory and clinical research programs designed to identify and develop new imaging approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, including research activities in oncologic molecular imaging.

The AD formulates the major scientific and operational policies of the program related to activities supported by grants, contracts, cooperative agreements, and partnerships with universities, private industry, and other federal agencies. Oncologic imaging encompasses various fields, including technological development initiatives in imaging, such as conventional and interventional radiology, computed tomography, nuclear medicine, ultrasound, magnetic resonance, and photoelectronic imaging.

As supervisor for the CIP staff, 20% of time is devoted to personnel issues, including recruiting, performance evaluations, and budget management. The position primarily focuses on scientific leadership and priority setting. The AD will provide leadership for pre-clinical and clinical efforts in support of NCI’s Imaging Drug Group, stimulating the development and dissemination of new imaging agents. The AD will also establish effective partnerships with academia, industry, and other Federal agencies to ensure innovative imaging technology is developed and successfully transferred, enhanced, and commercialized.

The ideal candidate will have knowledge of and experience in grant and contract processes and policies, a broad knowledge of cancer research, and administrative and managerial experience. This includes planning, analysis, evaluation, coordination, and integration of research support across program areas and boundaries within the NCI and NIH, as well as with other Federal and non-Federal agencies supporting cancer treatment-related research.

This is an exploratory ad to gauge interest and develop a possible candidate pool. A vacancy announcement (VA) for a Supervisory Physician, GP-602-15, will be posted on WWW.USAJOBS.GOV at a later date.
