Overview:

The Literacy Council of Alaska is looking for an ELL Program Director to lead the English Language Learners program. Our ideal candidate is an experienced ELL educator, who is culturally responsive with a welcoming attitude.

You will act as an educational leader responsible for the direction and daily operations of the English Language Learner (ELL) program for adult ELLs in the Interior and the North Slope, with students mostly concentrated in Fairbanks and Delta Junction. This includes planning annual programming, choosing curricula for group classes and tutoring sessions, staff and volunteer training and management, as well as community outreach.

You will have the opportunity to advocate for and implement programs that create positive impacts on the lives of adult ELLs, create strong connections with community partners, and contribute to the mission of literacy for all. Some evening and weekend hours will be required.

Job Duties:

Operations (50%)

Provide oversight on staffing, training, program promotion, outreach, and implementation

Review, develop and purchase instructional resources, materials and strategies for teaching (in person, virtual, and hybrid)

Recruit and orient new students and volunteers

Maintain safe, supportive, culturally responsive student-focused learning environments

Develop and monitor program budgets and reports

Attend Alaska Adult Education (AAE) Program Coordinator meetings twice a year, in spring and fall

Collaborate with the Adult Education Director to reach Adult Program goals

Instruction (20%)

Provide ELL classes to adult ELL learners

Provide professional development and teacher training for staff teachers and volunteers

Coordinate substitute teachers, occasionally substitute for classes

Reporting (20%)

Track student and volunteer attendance

Prepare required reports for donors and grants

Participate in state and federal program monitoring

Track student progress and use data to tailor instruction and services

Administer assessments and monitor assessment timelines

Maintain student data with current information and store in a secure environment

Outreach (10%)

Nurture and create relationships with community partners

Plan and participate in community outreach events

Promote programs through social media

Job Skills and Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree

Two years experience in English Language Teaching

High level of computer proficiency and willingness to learn new applications

Organized and a self-starter

Flexible and able to problem solve when assisting students

Strong classroom management skills

Thrives in cross-cultural settings

Excellent communication skills

Must be able to pass a background check

Preferred Qualifications:

Familiarity with BEST/CASAS/NRS standards

Has worked or volunteered with LCA for 6+ months

Able to speak at least one other language

This position is supervised by the Executive Director. The ELL Director is not a remote position; candidates should live in or be willing to relocate to Fairbanks.

Starting Salary: $25/hr DOE @ 40 hrs/wk
