The J. Smith Young YMCA is seeking a Director of Finance to join our Leadership Team!

Job DescriptionThis position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Finance Director stewards the Y’s cause, promoting and protecting the brand and reputation as a global, inclusive organization within the community. The Finance Director supports development of the operating budget, manages all accounting and HR functions, administers approved accounting policies and procedures, and ensures preparation of complete and accurate financial statements.

Qualifications

Bachelors degree in accounting, business administration, or finance required. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and/or Master's Degree in Business Administration preferred.

Three or more years of related experience in accounting.

Accounting experience in a nonprofit organization preferred.

Previous supervisory experience preferred.

Knowledge of, and expertise with, computerized accounting systems and standard business software.

Experience with franchise systems and franchise compliance is desirable.

Essential Functions

In conjunction with the CEO, hires, trains, supervises, develops, and manages all accounting staff, including accounts payable and receivable, payroll, grants management, and general accounting areas.

Maintains an accounting system to accomplish the proper recording and reporting of all operations, transactions, assets, and liabilities of the YMCA for all funds.

Monitors financial operations, prepares analysis and reports, and gives guidance to executive and operating staff. Works closely with operations staff on issues that affect financial outcome. Secures and allocates program or project resources so that strategic objectives can be achieved. Prepares specific recommendations.

Oversees the month-end and year-end closings and the preparation of statements and reports.

Performs reconciliations of all YMCA bank accounts on a monthly basis.

Maintains records, and prepares various internal and external reports, including reports for various federal and state agencies in conjunction with the CEO and Operations Director.

Manages the annual independent audit, the preparation of financial statements and the IRS 990 tax form. Prepares or oversees the preparation of required audit schedules; maintains records; acts as liaison with audit team and YMCA Business Development Committee.

Oversees preparation of reports to the United Way, YMCA of the USA, and governmental agencies.

Maintains all necessary records and accounting reports and records all transactions in a timely basis.

Maintains good working relationships with auditors, bankers, investment counselors, attorneys, and other professional advisors.

Coordinates and supervises operating cash flow management.

Oversees and provides leadership to the annual budget process including: issuing guidelines and procedures; training staff, auditing budgets, overseeing data input, and preparing reports.

Implements appropriate systems and internal controls to adequately safeguard the YMCA’s financial resources and to provide a solid basis for accurately reporting financial data.

Oversees compensation and benefit programs. Oversees benefit plan communication, enrollment, and administration. Remains current with employment laws and regulations. Maintains an effective program of compliance with laws and regulations related to human resources and manages relationships with compliance agencies and YMCA legal counsel.

Oversees HR/Payroll systems and employee records to ensure accuracy and improve the overall operation and effectiveness of the organization.

In conjunction with the Operations Director, oversees the Annual Giving Campaign to ensure fundraising goals are met.
