DESCRIPTIONJob Overview

UC San Diego’s Temporary Employment Services department is excited to announce a long-term opportunity for experienced student services professionals to join the university as Community Specialists. As key members of the SAFE (Supporting Advocacy & Free Expression) team, Community Specialists play a crucial role in fostering a positive, inclusive campus environment while ensuring the respectful exercise of First Amendment rights. This position is central conscientiously to managing protests, demonstrations, and other expressive activities on campus.

Key Responsibilities:

First-Responder Role:

Serve as the first point of contact for expressive activities on campus, assessing situations and determining appropriate actions or referrals in alignment with university policies.

Policy Interpretation and Guidance:

Independently provide information and interpretation of complex policies, procedures, and regulations related to free expression, student advocacy, and campus safety.

Student Support & Crisis Intervention:

Identify and respond to student needs, providing programs, services, and crisis intervention when necessary, while balancing the rights of individuals with the overall safety and order of the campus.

Collaboration & Event Support:

Work closely with students, faculty, and administration to implement policies and procedures that promote free speech in a respectful and secure environment. Provide on-the-ground support during campus events to uphold free speech principles while ensuring a peaceful and inclusive atmosphere.

Reporting Structure:

The Community Specialists report to the Assistant Vice Chancellor and work independently under general supervision to effectively manage expressive activities and related situations.

Ideal Candidate:

The ideal candidate will have experience in student services, crisis management, and a strong understanding of free speech principles. This role requires excellent communication and de-escalation skills, the ability to assess complex situations, and the capacity to collaborate with a wide range of campus stakeholders.

Anticipated duration: 12 months

Compensation: $31 - $34 / hour, including paid holidays and vacation/sick leave. Full-medical insurance also available.

Location: 100% on-site work primarily at UC San Diego’s main campus in La Jolla. (Some travel within the campus and to off-campus meetings or events may be required.)

Work schedule: Mon - Fri, 10:00 AM - 7:00 PM. Some evenings and weekend hours will be required to support campus events and demonstrations.

QUALIFICATIONS

Proven experience in community engagement, conflict resolution, or policy implementation, preferably in a higher education setting.

Strong understanding of First Amendment rights and related legal considerations, with the ability to apply this knowledge to campus policies and practices.

Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse groups and individuals.

Ability to work collaboratively with various campus departments and external stakeholders to achieve common goals.

Thorough knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.

Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during campus events and demonstrations.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $58,600 - $100,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $28.07 - $48.28

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
