DESCRIPTIONUC San Diego’s Temporary Employment Services department is excited to announce a new opportunity for experienced Alumni and External Relations professionals to join our Advancement team. The Assistant Director, Student Engagement & Philanthropy will play a key role in fostering a culture of pride, engagement, and philanthropy among students, alumni, and the broader UC San Diego community.

Key Responsibilities:

Program Management:

Design, implement, and manage the operational, administrative, and financial structures of the Student Foundation and its programs, including Student Alumni Associates, senior class giving, and other student volunteer-led organizations in Alumni Relations.

Strategic Leadership:

Develop and oversee annual student engagement plans and provide leadership for governing and advisory boards. Steward relationships with directors, student trustees, donors, and council members, ensuring alignment with the university's strategic objectives.

Collaboration & Engagement:

Collaborate with colleagues in Advancement and across campus to infuse pride, engagement, and philanthropy into student and alumni experiences. Create visible programs that promote philanthropy and connect current students with prominent alumni.

Philanthropic Initiatives:

Lead initiatives to identify, qualify, and solicit special gift prospects with a focus on donations ranging from $1,000 to $25,000. Work closely with Donor Development teams to promote donor recognition societies as vehicles for giving and stewardship.

Support & Special Projects:

Provide staff management and administrative support for special projects under the Senior Executive Director, Alumni Engagement.

Anticipated duration: 3 months +

Compensation: $40.90 - $42.15 / hour, including paid holidays and vacation/sick leave. Full-medical insurance also available.

Location: Hybrid/remote, remote work available 2 days per week. On-site work will be at UC San Diego’s main campus in La Jolla.

Work schedule: Mon - Fri, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM. Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in related area and/or an equivalent combination of experience and/or training.

Thorough working knowledge of fundraising, donor relations, and public relations concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques.

Proven experience in alumni relations, external relations, or a related field, with a strong track record of building student and alumni engagement programs.

Demonstrated experience with prospect outreach activities to include donor qualification and fundraising.

Ability to develop and manage strategic plans, foster relationships with key stakeholders, and execute engagement and fundraising initiatives.

Proven experience in effectively advising, motivating, and communicating with university students and staff.

Experience in successfully coordinating and executing the logistics of programs, special events, meetings, and receptions.

Ability to provide lead direction to staff and manage volunteers in accomplishing established goals and objectives and maintain office activities with respect to established procedures and guidelines.

Demonstrated working knowledge of accepted accounting principles and practices and experience in drafting and overseeing a program budget.

Pay Transparency ActAnnual Full Pay Range: $85,400 - $156,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $40.90 - $75.10

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
