Scope of JobThe Vice Dean of Research & Innovation, School of Medicine (SOM) will be responsible for providing leadership and strategy for the School of Medicine and its departments in basic science and clinical research, setting priorities for research development, entrepreneurship and commercialization, identifying gaps in the School’s research portfolio, providing training and support to enhance funding success, and reporting and dissemination of School’s research performance.
Description of DutiesThe duties listed below for the Vice Dean of Research & Innovation for the School of Medicine (SOM) are to be executed in coordination with the UTRGV Division of Research within institutional strategies and priorities:
Serves as the School’s liaison with UTRGV Division of Research, as well as external counterparts across the UT System Health Related Institutions.
Attends “Associate Dean for Research (ADR)” meetings, coordinated by the UTRGV Division of Research and represents SOM.
Oversees the research enterprise of the School of Medicine; serves a critical role in informing and leading initiatives that ensure the school meets its strategic goals in research mission.
Recommends and implements the school’s research infrastructure.
Increases NIH, NSF, and grant direct and indirect funding for the School of Medicine year over year.
Works collaboratively to develop all areas related to the school’s research portfolio, aligning research objectives with the school’s strategic priorities, involving research support staff in discussions and partnership planning for research and innovation projects.
Supports other missions of the medical school, engages with students, and collaborates with integrated service units, to develop and provide advice related to research, including faculty research development and engagement, staff recruitment, infrastructure, budgets, on time reporting, and funding opportunities. Meets regularly with departmental and unit level leadership in these areas.
Collaborates with executive leadership team members to recommend, establish, and implement policies and procedures to encourage and facilitate research for faculty, students, and staff.
Leads planning and oversight of school research events.
Designs, develops and operationalizes pathways for innovation and commercialization of research projects and intellectual property. Focuses on commercialization opportunities.
Establishes and operationalizes SOM research and administrative cores, with a focus on financial sustainability and access to all customers.
Oversees the design and implementation of student research and innovation projects in partnership with faculty and education leadership.
Seeks out and supports funding opportunities for research, partnering with University Advancement as appropriate.
Interacts as appropriate with all levels of university administration and works closely with the VP of Research and assists the Dean in representing the research trajectory of the school.
In consultation with the executive leadership team, oversees shared-equipment and shared-facility policies and procedures, prioritizing utilization of technological and clinical equipment; oversees the development and design of innovation spaces.
Oversees research-related regulatory and compliance issues for SOM, in compliance with federal and state requirements, campus/University requirements and guidelines, and other University research and safety related regulatory groups.
Oversees compliance with relevant Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) standards and participate in ongoing accreditation activities.
Oversees SOM Organized Research Units (ORUs) to ensure sustainability, metrics achievement, and functionality.
Chairs the Research Advisory Committee.
Mentors junior researchers.
Performs other related duties or projects as assigned to further the mission of the SOM.
Supervision ReceivedThe position reports directly to the Dean School of Medicine & Sr VP for UTHRGV, with a dotted line to the UTRGV SR VP for Research & Grad College.
Supervision GivenDirect supervision of assigned staff.
Required EducationM.D.; D.O.; or Ph.D. (doctorate) degree in a research area relevant to medical education.
Preferred EducationM.D./Ph.D.
Required ExperienceTen (10) years of experience in increasingly higher levels of responsibility in basic science and clinical research.
EquipmentUse of standard office equipment.
Working ConditionsNeeds to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office/healthcare environment; some travel and weekend work is required. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
