Senior Associate Dean for Academic AffairsPOSITION DETAILSThe CUNY School of Medicine (CUNY SoM) located in the heart of Harlem, New York, is the only medical school in the City University of New York system and the only public medical school in Manhattan. Building upon 50 years of success as the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education, the institution transitioned to the CUNY School of Medicine (SoM) in 2016. The CUNY SoM offers an accelerated BS/MD degree (7-year program) and a Physician Assistant Master's Degree (27 months program). True to its legacy of access, opportunity, and community transformation, the medical school’s mission remains to recruit highly talented students as diverse as New York City itself. CUNY SoM places a special emphasis on the recruitment of those who are underrepresented in the field of medicine and on training high quality, culturally competent health professionals and scientists equipped to address the healthcare needs of New York’s medically under-served communities. As a major priority, CUNY SoM also seeks to enhance the recruitment and retention of senior leadership, faculty, and staff to more closely reflect the diversity of our student body.The Dean's Office is currently seeking a Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. Reporting to the Dean, this position serves as a key and senior advisor to the Dean of the CUNY SoM for all academic matters. The Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs will provide leadership to all academic areas so they reflect the mission of CUNY SoM. With the ethos of student success first, the Senior Associate Dean will be an advocate for all academic programs, providing leadership to faculty and academic staff to ensure consistent quality standards in curriculum and programs to meet the needs of students. The Senior Associate Dean oversees the academic integrity of the CUNY SoM and provides leadership in long-range planning, budgeting, curriculum, and program development; and leads efforts to expand clinical education experience for the students. The Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs duties include but are not limited to the following responsibilities:Establish a strategic plan that identifies a tailored and prioritized set of opportunities for innovative medical education programs and clinical development in line with the mission of the SoM; streamline programs of study and assist with creating innovative pathways and partnerships to enhance enrollment and degree completion.Work in collaboration with the SoM Associate Dean cohort and other members of the School’s leadership team to develop strategies for program quality; systematic curricular planning, development, implementation, evaluation, and revision to support SoM goals regarding programming, assessment, and faculty development.Develop a team capable of efficiently and effectively implementing the academic plans to both enhance the mission and reputation of the SoM and contribute in a meaningful way to enhance the financial state of the school; oversee affiliate/voluntary faculty processes including conflict resolution and facilitate coordination of processes between the Office of Academic Affairs and other departments.Incorporate and anticipate technological advancements for blended learning, and work closely with the Dean and Associate Deans to maintain each program’s agility and innovative character; and build and maintain the infrastructure to support each program’s demand for high quality medical education programming and services.In consultation with Department Chairs, provide direction and interpretation of faculty appointment, promotion, and tenure processes to ensure compliance with all university policies, procedures, and practices; advise and assist individual faculty members and departments regarding promotion and tenure, and coordinate updates of departments’ written statements of evidence.Oversee administrative reviews in accordance with CUNY and SoM Regulations of department chairs, assistant and associate deans, and program directors; including tracking and coordination of administering surveys and review and discussion with the chair or deans and unit employees, if needed.Manage faculty governance process and provide guidance to Executive Faculty Council to ensure appropriate representation on SoM governance committees; coordinate activities pertaining to faculty governance (elections, committees, bylaws); develop and review guidelines annually for documenting faculty effort. Serve as a delegated approver for the Dean.Lead a comprehensive faculty career development program in support of the SoM’s mission; develop, promote, and implement initiatives focused on school-wide and departmental level faculty development, mentoring, succession planning, and retention.Partner with campus leaders to integrate faculty development needs; assist in the refinement and implementation of the School’s strategic plan; establish benchmarks and metrics which evaluate the effectiveness of programs developed including faculty affairs and professional development.Provide leadership in planning and implementation of strategies to advance and maintain Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA), and Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) accreditation; regularly review and/or develop faculty policies to ensure relevance and continued applicability to current and changing circumstances in medical education and, as appropriate, recommend needed changes to such policies.Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean or designee.QUALIFICATIONSThis position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.PREFERRED:MD degree and a minimum of 10 years of related management and academic experience at a senior level within academic medicine or higher education.Proven academic physician leader and clinician for 5-8 years and proven leadership of a clinically focused unit, program, or Department.National leader with scholarship and research funding consistent with tenure.Track record of significant accomplishments in academic administration in a medical school or healthcare setting and knowledge of emerging health care trends and recognized leader in the health care administration and academic medicine.Demonstrated success in recruiting, inspiring, and mentoring a diverse senior leadership team and providing direction to achieve best-in-class performance of the organization.Superior interpersonal and effective communication skills (written and oral) and able to partner with clinical, research, and academic administrative leaders.Advanced experience and knowledge about healthcare compliance, regulatory affairs, and operations.Knowledge of medical school accreditation including but not limited to LCME, ARC-PA, and MSCHE.Expertise in conflict management, coaching, building and leading cohesive teams and a strong understanding of the culture of academic medicine and the ability to address faculty concerns.Experience working with underrepresented in medicine, low-income, and marginalized students working in health-related or STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and Medicine) fields or other health professional pipeline programs is highly desirable.Experience with quality improvement principles as it relates to health care disparities to improve the quality of medical education and health professional decision making.Advanced understanding of the importance of diversity in academic medicine and the impact of educational and health care disparities on medicine.Experience working with and developing others including Physician Assistants.Familiarity and ability to support the School’s new NIH Center grant for Research Centers in Minority Education.CUNY TITLEAdministratorCOMPENSATION AND BENEFITSSalary Range: $200,000 - $285,000.
