Research Assistant/Associate Professor

The University of Miami (UM) School of Nursing and Health Studies (SONHS) seeks to hire an Asst./Assoc Professor (Research Track). UM is one of the top research universities and academic medical centers in the nation and is a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU)—a distinguished national organization comprised of only 3 percent of 4-year universities in the U.S.

The mission of the School of Nursing and Health Studies (SONHS) is to transform lives and health care through education, research, and service across the hemisphere. Among schools of nursing for FY22, the SONHS’ scientific portfolio is ranked 25th in the nation for NIH funding with a portfolio totaling $3.396 million.

The selected individual must have a strong background and experience in advanced biostatistics to collaborate closely with tenured and tenure-track faculty to support grant and manuscript submissions that advance the research mission of the school. The candidate will work with the Associate Dean for the Research office to lead biostatistical writing plan and reviews for grants. Additionally, the selected individual will be encouraged to continue developing their own program of research focused on advancing biostatistical approaches to address issues related to health equity and health disparities.

Candidates should have:

Strong teamwork skills and statistical leadership skills.

Strong experience with statistical support and consultation, especially relevant to NIH grant submission and management.

Collaborate with other faculty to obtain research funding for trans-disciplinary research.

Submit NIH grants as biostatistician or PI in topics related to health equity and health disparities and/or statistical advancements.

Present research findings at professional meetings in local communities, nationally, and across the globe.

Publish seminal research findings in refereed, high impact, peer-reviewed journals.

Qualifications:

PhD degree with specific graduate training in biostatistics or a related field.

Advanced skills and experience with statistical epidemiology (cohort studies), intervention studies, and (if possible) molecular epidemiology (epigenetics and genetics).

Advanced skills in data management and statistical analysis.

Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.

Experience collaborating with nurses in NIH grant submission.

Strong programming skills, especially with R and SAS.

Experience working with cluster computing servers.

Committed to high professional ethical standards and a diverse workplace.

Evidence of high-impact publications where the candidate has served as the biostatistician or lead researcher.

Evidence of being able to secure grant funding to support a program of research.

Ability to work in a large team to assist in the development of major NIH grants.

Effective oral and written communication skills including presentations at scientific meetings, and a significant publication record in peer-reviewed high impact journals.

Demonstrated ability to lead innovative research projects to successful conclusions.

Experience mentoring graduate students and supervising senior research staff.
