Position Summary

Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast (GSWISE) is seeking an exceptional and inclusive leader to serve as Chief People Officer (CPO). The CPO will support the mission of the Council by working with the CEO and other key stakeholders to promote a strong sense of belonging for all. The CPO will serve as point person for strategy & belonging plan, the development of goals and objectives to proactively train, develop, implement and execute GSWISE’s commitment to serving as an inclusive organization that serves all girls. This role will lead the HR and Volunteer Training & Development teams, overseeing all aspects of human resources management, training and development, with a focus on embedding Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Racial Justice (DEIRJ), and cultural competency throughout the organization. This position requires a visionary leader with exceptional emotional intelligence, executive function, and a deep commitment to anti-racism and dismantling systems of oppression.

Compensation

Annual salary of $94,000 to $142,000, commensurate with experience and skillset.

Position Overview

Leadership:

Provide strategic direction and oversight for HR and Volunteer Training & Development teams, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and values. Collaborate with senior management to assess and enhance diversity and inclusion programs, establishing best practices and removing barriers. Serve as a GSUSA thought partner and liaison for national DEIRJ plans. Develop and maintain strong relationships with experts in the DEIRJ field.

Supervisory Responsibility:

This position will directly supervise one (1) full-time HR Staff (HR analyst) and one (1) full-time Adult Training and Development Manager. As part of the Senior Leadership Team, this position will have staff oversight responsibility while working with all constituents throughout GSWISE.

Strategic Planning:

In partnership with Senior Leadership, create and implement strategy plans that promote diversity and enable an inclusive culture; including creating policies, practices, and training programs to enhance employees’ understanding.

DEIRJ Integration:

Own and advance GSWISE’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging vision and strategy to enable a high-performance culture that supports both the Council’s strategic goals and the needs of the current workforce, and that encourages inclusivity in the organization’s environment such that all employees feel valued, respected, engaged, and empowered. Develop strategies to embed DEIRJ principles into HR policies, practices, and programs. Implement performance management systems to promote accountability and transparency in DEIRJ and cultural competency. Benchmark milestones to measure effectiveness of strategy and outcomes.

Performance Monitoring and Reporting:

Establish metrics and KPIs to monitor membership growth and engagement efforts, providing regular updates to the CEO and Board of Directors.

Training and Development:

Design and oversee initiatives to enhance DEIRJ acumen and cultural competency across the organization to all of our key stakeholders. Support change management efforts for staff/volunteer training ensuring adherence to DEIRJ best practices including respecting cultural norms.

Talent Acquisition and Retention:

Develop strategies for recruiting, retaining, and advancing a diverse workforce reflective of our communities.

Employee Engagement:

Foster a positive employee experience through effective communication, recognition programs, and initiatives promoting belonging and shared purpose.

Compliance and Risk Management:

Ensure HR practices comply with legal requirements and mitigate risks related to DEIRJ, discrimination, harassment, and equity issues.

Budget Oversight:

Manage the HR budget effectively, allocating resources to support DEIRJ initiatives and strategic objectives.

Who You Are and Keys to Success

Minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience with a proven track record in executing HR responsibilities, or an Advanced degree in Human Resources, Non-Profit Management, Organizational Psychology, Business Administration, or related field.

HR adjacent experience preferred, with at least 4 years specifically focused on DEIRJ strategy development and implementation.

Expertise in strategic planning, aligning HR initiatives with organizational goals and priorities.

Strong understanding of cultural competency, anti-racism, and systemic oppression, with a demonstrated commitment to advancing DEIRJ principles.

Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills, adept at building trust, influencing stakeholders, and driving change across all organizational levels.

Ability to lead diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility initiatives effectively.

High emotional intelligence, capable of navigating complex organizational dynamics and sensitive issues with empathy and professionalism.

Experience in nonprofit or mission-driven organizations is preferred.

Highly accountable with strong organizational skills, capable of managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Occasional travel within the region is required. A valid driver’s license and use of your own vehicle are preferred. If so, you must comply with the council’s automobile insurance policy limits and have a driving record that meets the requirements of the council’s business auto insurance carrier. If you are unable to drive, a transportation plan must be submitted and approved prior to official offer being made.

Open to work an occasional flexible schedule, including evening and weekend hours.

Willingness to subscribe to the philosophy of the Girl Scout program and join as a Girl Scout member which includes paying a membership fee, either annually or as a life-time member.

We are Girl Scouts! Although work is performed in a normal indoor environment, there will be times that will require exposure to outdoors. Due to the cyclical nature of the Girl Scouts' business and the need for operational efficiency, employees may occasionally be asked to assist with tasks in other departments. This may include, but is not limited to, areas such as programming, cookie distribution, and other related activities.

Employees must occasionally sit and/or stand for extended periods and operate office equipment manually. The employee will routinely lift 15 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
