Network Development Function

The Mass General Brigham Network Development team works collaboratively across the organization to develop, source, nurture, and grow relationships that benefit the system and its members. The team ensures that existing clinical relationships are effectively managed while pursuing new partnerships to meet the needs of hospitals, physician organizations, departments, centers, and the system overall. The team strategically and efficiently evaluates potential targets for mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, affiliations, and other partnership models to achieve this goal. The network development function assesses which relationships will be most valuable to MGB and its entities, vets potential partners, identifies optimal deal structures, executes agreements, and collaborates with planning and implementation teams across the system. The team focuses on capability building by implementing standardized workflows and processes.

Job Summary

The role of the Affiliation Director at Mass General Brigham requires exceptional relationship management skills. This position is responsible for developing and managing external clinical affiliations with organizations across the care continuum, including skilled nursing facilities, hospices, and long-term care providers. The Affiliation Director creates plans and programs with affiliates to help achieve MGB's clinical, operational, and financial objectives. To ensure that the affiliates are aligned with the organization's goals and objectives, the Affiliation Director cultivates relationships and collaborates with internal and external stakeholders. This includes overseeing key initiatives, optimizing the performance of each affiliate, identifying opportunities to expand collaborations, and maintaining a deep understanding of the healthcare industry.

The Affiliation Director assists in identifying new care continuum affiliations, supports contract negotiation under the direction and guidance of the Vice President, and is responsible for the successful integration and ongoing management of the clinical affiliations. They also act as an intermediary and trusted liaison between MGB and the affiliate.

The ideal candidate for this position should have significant experience in partnership management in a large, complex healthcare system. They should possess the ability to influence and drive results with clinical leaders, senior management, and external stakeholders through effective relationship management.

Responsibilities:

Relationship Management:

Responsible for building and maintaining positive relationships within MGB and with affiliated organizations. This involves setting goals for relationships, planning and facilitating regular meetings with affiliates, and working collaboratively to address issues and opportunities.

Ensure effective and timely communication with affiliates and MGB stakeholders.

Develop and foster effective collaboration between MGB and the affiliate, clinical departments, medical staff, and leadership to ensure an integrated approach.

Perform affiliate health assessments and develop meaningful action plans. This involves identifying performance metrics, tracking and implementing tools to monitor progress, identifying opportunities for improvement, and developing action plans to address them.

Conduct opportunity assessments, prioritization, and decision-making for new and established affiliations.

Report updates and progress on clinical affiliation initiatives to appropriate stakeholders.

Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to advance shared organizational goals and objectives. This involves working closely with other departments within MGB and the affiliate to ensure that the needs of all stakeholders are addressed.

Coordinate with legal and financial teams to execute contracts.

Represent MGB and affiliate appropriately internally and externally, fostering positive community relations and image while promoting the affiliate as a community resource.

Business Development:

Identify new partners based on clinical needs and support the assessment of the potential partner’s fit with relationship objectives.

Engage internal and external colleagues in market research and other assessments of new models and opportunities for collaboration.

Identify opportunities for growth and expansion of the clinical affiliations. This involves staying up to date on industry trends and best practices.

Manage more than one affiliate relationship.

Education:

Bachelor's degree required; master's degree in healthcare administration, business, or a related field preferred.

Experience:

A minimum of 6 years progressive leadership experience in healthcare, with a strong focus on partnership management, strategic affiliations, and business development.

Experience interfacing with C-Suite executives, clinicians, and other key stakeholders.

Proven track record of managing complex, high-stakes external partnerships within a large, multifaceted healthcare system.

Experience executing or significantly contributing to negotiating contracts and managing large-scale affiliation agreements.

Skills:

Demonstrated expertise in relationship management at an executive level, particularly within healthcare settings.

Strong financial acumen, with experience in evaluating the fiscal impact of strategic partnerships and making data-driven decisions.

Excellent strategic thinking and planning skills, with the ability to anticipate challenges and proactively develop solutions.

High proficiency in project management, with the ability to manage multiple complex initiatives simultaneously and deliver results within tight deadlines.

Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams, mentor junior staff, and foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
