ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

Partnerships to Uplift Communities (PUC) Schools is comprised of a non-profit network of public charter schools designed to significantly increase high school graduation rates, college entrance, and college graduation rates for underserved students in North-East Los Angeles, and the North-East San Fernando Valley.

The ideal Director of School and College Counseling believes in and is passionate about the mission and commitments of PUC Schools and exhibits this through their leadership, reflection, execution of school culture, and collaboration to ensure student success. The Director of School and College Counseling upholds the mission and values established by PUC Schools and takes initiative in developing and managing a strong, effective program.

The Director of School and College Counseling is a member of the Academic Team and will report to the Chief Academic Officer (CAO). Their primary role will be to support high school counseling programs with an emphasis on academic and social emotional development. They demonstrate a commitment to supporting equity, diversity and inclusivity and are committed to working collaboratively with various stakeholders. They should have a strong knowledge of student information systems, financial aid systems, codes and regulations affecting student services as well as a knowledge and understanding of California Higher Education systems and student service programs. The Director of School and College Counseling will need to be able to lead effectively in a multi-layered organization and build strong relationships with teachers, coaches, school leaders, senior leadership and other home office and school-based colleagues. They should have a core of customer service and demonstrate the ability to establish and sustain systems to provide great service experiences to stakeholders. They should also possess the flexibility to adapt to constantly changing environments and continually look for ways to work proactively to improve systems, structures, and processes.

Mission & Vision:

Embody resourcefulness, knowledge, experience, and proven strategies related to supporting the growth and development of school site leaders and their school & college counselors.

Work with a sense of purpose, urgency, responsiveness, openness to feedback and professionalism in all matters related to the mission and vision of PUC Schools

Works closely with the CAO to build professional trust, rapport, communication, support, team, and overall professionalism in support of the duties related to this role, school site, and the organization

Develop an arc of academic and social emotional counseling activities and experiences for students in grade 9-12 to support a college-going mindset that leads to persistent to and through college

Develop and maintain a bank of resources, reports, and templates for counselors, school leaders and other staff across a variety of topics (e.g., individual academic plans, dual enrolment options, credit recovery options, etc.)

Identify and implement quantitative benchmarks for data analysis using multiple platforms (i.e., PowerSchool, Mosaic, Naviance) to drive consistent, high quality student services and ongoing refinement of strategies to ultimately support all students in grades 9-12 in achieving milestones leading to college acceptance, matriculation and success.

Professional Development:

Work collaboratively with the Chief Academic Officer (CAO) to support PUC Schools Professional Development Scope & Sequence in areas related to school site leadership and the development of site-based school & college counselors.

Work collaboratively with the Chief Academic Officer (CAO) to gather school site data in order to analyze trends to inform the coaching and development of school site counselors and school leaders.

Create systems to ensure school and college counselors are using learning from PD to drive academic and social emotional practices at their school sites

Collaborate with the CAO in analyzing and improving current processes, resources and enabling conditions

Curate and coordinate all PUC Wide School & College Counseling PDs in collaboration with the CAO

Work with the Academic Team to exchange information, coordinate activities, develop school leaders

Modify and recommends appropriate changes to existing training programs

Coaching:

Work collaboratively with the Chief Academic Officer to support site-based school & college counselor needs

Regularly meet with school & college counselors to provide feedback on impact and gather data on promising practices to highlight and share with the larger team.

Operations:

Serve as lead of UC Course Management portal, supporting schools with maintaining accurate UC Course Lists for A-G eligibility

Manage master scheduling process in collaboration with CAO and SIS Team, providing support to schools to ensure accurate course information and scheduling in PowerSchool and accurate reporting to CALPADS

Maintain PUC Schools Course Catalog for high schools

Other:

Work with the PUC Academic Team, under the guidance and direction of the Chief Academic Officer to design, engage, collaborate, create, support, and develop school leaders & school and college counselors.

Passion for hands-on, rigorous counseling

Perform other duties as assigned

What

we require from you?

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in related field or equivalent training and experience required

Masters Degree from an accredited college or university required

Experience:

7+ years of professional experience in school counseling, including at least 2 years working as a school leader or at the network level

Valid Pupil Personnel Service (PPS) credential required

Fluency with PowerSchool, UC Course Management Portal, Naviance, social-emotional learning and approaches to foster a comprehensive counseling and college-going mindset

Experience with facilitating professional development for site leaders and counselors

Skills and Abilities

Instructional background and skills

Common Core State Standards and instructional shifts

Adult learning theory, facilitation skills, and design of professional development

Use and analysis of assessment data to inform instruction

Experience and comfort observing and providing direct feedback to leaders, both written and verbal, which leads to immediate improvement

Proficient with Google Suite: Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms

Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)

Must be flexible and collaborative

Able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment

Strong work ethic, accountability, and ownership of work

Regular attendance, dependability, and punctuality in conformance with the standards are essential to the successful performance of this position

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Occasionally required to kneel, climb, and reach with hands and arms above shoulder level, lift up to 30 pounds. To bend, sit, stand, squat, stoop, walk, push, pull, and reach with hands and arms at shoulder level or below. Always required to wear the appropriate safety equipment for the task, which may include gloves, goggles, aprons, belts, etc.
