Job Description - Paralegal Specialist (240007SH)The Board of Registration in Medicine (BORIM) under the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) is seeking an experienced professional for the role of Paralegal Specialist. The incumbent will research and analyze malpractice information, out-of-state discipline complaints/reports from the NPDB, and prepare legal documents including draft subpoenas and DPH Orders. Responsibilities include maintaining legal databases, performing compliance functions with respect to state and federal laws, and responding to inquiries concerning laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures applicable to the work of the agency and the Enforcement Division.The paralegal specialist will assist attorneys and investigators in communications with witnesses, prepare, edit, and proofread documents and letters, schedule and coordinate meetings, maintain a division calendar, compile and prepare Board and Committee materials, record and transcribe Committee minutes, and assist with acquiring and coordinating the services of vendors to serve subpoenas and provide stenographic transcripts and translations. Additional duties include assisting with obtaining and preserving evidence, facilitating the hiring of medical expert reviewers, and performing related work as required.Duties and ResponsibilitiesAssist in reviewing and filing pleadings and motions in adjudicatory proceedings and trial court actions.Coordinate with attorneys and investigative staff to facilitate the acquisition of medical records.Coordinate with the Director of Enforcement and attorneys for investigative subpoenas.Oversee the preparation of meeting agendas and coordinate appearances before the Committee.Act as Committee clerk, compile and prepare materials for Committee meetings.Maintain a calendar of events for cases at DALA.Coordinate with Enforcement staff for expert witness review contracts.Maintain knowledge of the Board’s statutes and regulations.Maintain a courteous and professional demeanor while working under stressful conditions.Track the submission of Consent Orders and Statements of Allegations.Assist with matters involving reciprocal discipline.Assist attorneys with hearing preparation.Maintain databases and tracking systems.Coordinate with attorneys and staff to acquire prescription data from pharmacies.Perform general legal work as required.Required QualificationsSkill to use a computer for research, managing databases, and producing written documents.Talent to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.Skill to gather information through questioning and examining records.Capability to exercise discretion in handling confidential information.Ability to read and understand legal documents.Preferred QualificationsCapacity to multi-task and prioritize responsibilities.Special Requirements:Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's License may be required.About the Board of Registration in Medicine:The Board’s mission is to ensure that only qualified and competent physicians of good moral character are licensed to practice in Massachusetts and that they provide a high standard of care.MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, paraprofessional experience in legal research or legal assistant work, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and substitutions.Substitutions:I.

An Associate's or higher degree with a major in paralegal studies may be substituted for the required experience.II.
