Position SummaryThe Editorial Manager will help shape and sharpen the storytelling that amplifies Arts & Sciences’ strategic goals. They will serve as the primary editor for daily editorial content, including articles for the Ampersand website and weekly newsletters. In addition, the Editorial Manager will provide copy editing, fact-checking, and writing support for Ampersand magazine and other communications projects, including proposals, remarks, presentations, video motion graphics, etc. This position will also develop and maintain a style guide for Arts & Sciences Marketing & Communications to ensure the school’s communications are consistent across platforms.

As the primary backup to the Associate Director of Communications, the Editorial Manager should expect extensive collaboration with a diverse and talented team of marketing and communications professionals. The Editorial Manager may also supervise student interns and freelance writers.

Job DescriptionPrimary Duties & Responsibilities:

Serves as the initial editor of Arts & Sciences’ editorial content and newsletters.

Edits articles, newsletters, and other communications assignments to ensure they are clear, compelling, and correct.

Undertakes a range of editorial work for Ampersand magazine, including copy editing and fact-checking articles.

Creates SEO-optimized headlines, subheads, captions, and teaser text.

Manages the production and distribution of the weekly Ampersand newsletter.

Ensures stories are accurate, free of typos, and in line with AP, WashU, and Arts & Sciences style guides.

Maintains accurate production calendars, ensuring editorial projects stay on track.

Coaches and guides staff writers in translating academic research into compelling stories for general audiences.

Provides writing and editing support to the A&S MarComm Team and academic departments.

In consultation with the Associate Director of Communications, provide copywriting and editing for marketing, social, web, and multimedia projects.

Provides copy editing services to academic departments.

Writes a variety of content for the Ampersand and Inside Arts & Science websites.

Prepares articles for online publication using a CMS.

Serves as a liaison from Arts & Sciences to editorial colleagues in University Marketing & Communications and other schools.

Ensures adherence to style and brand guidelines.

Develops an Arts & Sciences Marketing & Communications style guide.

Updates and applies the A&S Sciences style guide across communications projects.

Oversees style guide training for staff members.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Salary RangeBase pay is commensurate with experience. The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
