Description of Duties

This is an attorney position located at the Department of Public Safety, Assigned Counsel Program responsible for providing legal training and mentorship to attorneys who are part of the Monroe County Assigned Counsel Program Panel. The focus of the position is to train and mentor panel attorneys in order to improve services rendered to indigent clients. The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of the Assigned Counsel Administrator. Does related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:

The Training/Mentorship Program Coordinator shall be an attorney duly licensed to practice law in the State of New York with at least five (5) years of experience handling criminal and/or Family Court matters. Experience as a criminal defense attorney

Must possess clear and effective communication skills and have the ability to build relationships with clients, judges, lawyers, court administrators, other persons within the court system, and court officials.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES (may include but not limited to) :

Evaluates training needs of Assigned Counsel Program Panel attorneys;

Organizes Attorney training and development initiatives

Organizes Curriculum materials and information to align with specific curriculum needs

Oversees a Mentorship Program designed to offer support and guidance to less experienced Assigned

Counsel Program Panel attorney and meets regularly with the Assigned Counsel Administrator and Assigned

Counsel Program Panel supervisors to discuss ways to improve the Assigned Counsel Program;

Develops and plans required Continuing Legal Education programs for both inexperienced and experienced Assigned Counsel Program Panel attorneys;

Develops and maintains related forms for Assigned Counsel Program Panel attorneys reference (the motion/brief bank) and update as necessary.
