This is a Vehicle/Equipment Repair Technician III position (60024419). This position is in the Fayetteville (Cumberland County) Equipment Shop. Performs highly skilled automotive and heavy equipment work. Work includes performance of a wide range of progressively responsible tasks involving the service, inspection, repair, rebuild and diagnosis of mechanical systems of gasoline/diesel powered automotive and heavy equipment. Employees may perform mechanical work at various levels. Work assignments vary in complexity depending on the type of mechanical system. This position will function as an Advanced level mechanic. Must be able to perform skilled mechanic work on systems; preventive maintenance; brakes; steering; tires & tubes; wheels, rims, & hubs; transmission (Auto); charging system; cranking system; ignition system; lighting system; cooling system; exhaust system; fuel system; power unit; hydraulics; air conditioning; instruments & gauges; air intake system; suspension; transmission (manual) axle driven rear and axle front (non-driven). Procures material for other DOT agencies as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Experience in performing electrical/electronic diagnostics and repair of complex wiring on two of the following: light, medium, heavy-duty trucks and heavy equipment.Experience in performing hydraulic system diagnostics, repairs and rebuilds on a variety of equipment.Experience in troubleshooting and repair of a minimum of two of the following: light, medium, heavy duty, or farm equipment brake components.Experience using SAP to receive inventory and bill parts, fuel, and lubes.Experience in inventory management including parts, fuel, and lube commodities.

Additional Expectations :

Ability to repair and maintain automotive and heavy equipment, and diagnose problems using diagnostic equipment, prepare paperwork essential to employment and equipment repair. Ability to understand both written and oral instructions, move parts and material necessary to repair and maintain equipment. Ability to read schematics, diagrams, and sketches and possesses the physical strength to move relatively heavy objects. Ability to read maps, and to identify components (Engine, air compressor, differential, etc.). Ability to safely operate equipment for testing purposes. Ability to work indoor and outdoor environment. Ability to work in emergency situations and inclement weather. Safety toe footwear is needed.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three (3) years of experience in the area of assignment, or a sufficient year-for-year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications:

May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.
