Lakeside School, an independent coeducational day school located in north Seattle, Washington, is currently recruiting for Global Service Learning Trip Leaders. Applicants should share Lakeside's commitment to sustaining a school in which individuals representing diverse cultures and experiences instruct one another in the meaning and value of community and in the importance of lifelong learning. GSL locations for summer 2025 may include sites in Peru, Costa Rica, Fiji, Tanzania, Senegal, and French Polynesia.
ResponsibilitiesGSL trip leaders report to Lakeside’s Associate Director of Global Programs and are responsible for managing and executing all aspects of the assigned trip in accordance with the program design developed by the Associate Director in collaboration with host country partners. All trip leaders must attend the leader training meetings and facilitate country-specific meetings with students on campus during pre-trip curriculum days. Core responsibilities for all trip leaders include, but are not limited to:
Attend pre-trip meetings such as the medical meeting and trip logistics meeting (1-2 evening meetings via Zoom, dates TBD).
Attend leader training (full day June 12-15 for new trip leaders and 13-15 for returning trip leaders).
Travel with students and co-leaders to/from Seattle to host country service site and reside in the community with the group (obligatory). Expected travel dates are June 20- July 20 (give or take 1-2 days for flight schedules).
Facilitate informational and curricular meetings with student participants during pre-trip meetings on Lakeside campus (full day June 16-18).
Oversee all aspects of the program on site and in accordance with the program calendar that will be provided by the GSL office (travel logistics, home-stay arrangements, and program activities), pre-trip curriculum, and language training (if applicable); service work with the partner organization; student health and safety; planning and overseeing daily reflection and curricular meetings.
Maintain financial records of expenses incurred during the trip.
Evaluate the project, submit written comments on students, and turn in all receipts and a budget report within two weeks of return.
Lodging and transportation fees are covered by Lakeside when travel is required for Main Leaders and Assistant Leaders not residing in the Seattle area.
Requirements and Qualifications
Experience in leading student groups overseas.
Fluency in one or multiple languages other than English is a plus as well as significant time spent in rural areas in the developing world.
Training and/or experience in experiential and/or outdoor education is desirable.
A hardy constitution is important and references should speak to the applicant’s integrity, flexibility, and ability to be an effective member of a team.
Leaders must be available to attend leader training, pre-trip meetings, and travel to/from Seattle to host country with students (as outlined above). In addition, leaders must be available for a post-trip debrief meeting within 2 days of return from the trip.
All applicants must have a college degree; non-Lakeside alumni must be 25 years of age and all applicants will be subject to employment and reference checks.
Required Wilderness First Aid/CPR certification will be covered at Lakeside’s expense if needed.
Demonstrated cultural awareness, including knowledge of themselves and the cultural lenses they bring to interactions. The candidate will understand different perspectives; interact respectfully with cultures other than their own; and cultivate meaningful relationships with people that have different cultural frameworks.
Candidates must satisfactorily complete at least two criminal background checks.
Compensation and BenefitsSalary Range: $9,900-$10,700. Lakeside School is committed to attracting and retaining outstanding employees by providing a competitive compensation package. Individuals will receive a stipend that is based on their completion of required pre and post-meetings, training sessions, and the assigned trip. Travel reimbursement will be limited and established prior to position appointment.
