Burns & McDonnell is looking for a Senior HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) and FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission Systems) Technical Consultant to support in developing technical proposals, business development efforts, and for the development of commercial aspects of proposals including costing & scheduling. The HVDC Technical Consultant will provide technical support related to HVDC and FACTS systems as well as a broad range of project management and commissioning management support.

Job duties may include:

Technical support related to HVDC and FACTS systems including but not limited to: feasibility studies

Technical specifications

Engineering oversight and management

Design review

Control & protection design

PSCAD model development and studies

Dynamic performance studies

Factory inspections

Major equipment test witnessing

Control & protection system factory acceptance testing.

Integration of HVDC & FACTS devices within the interconnected AC grid

Operational readiness (operating procedures, training of operations personnel, etc.)

Operations & Maintenance

Project management support activities including: schedule and cost monitoring

Stakeholder consultation

Interfacing with system operators

Contract compliance

Risk management

Commissioning Management support activities including: development of Project Commissioning Plan

Project Systematization for mechanical completions.

Building and leading multidisciplinary teams.

Integration and oversight of complex industrial plant processes using advanced automation systems.

Commissioning sequence and schedule development.

Sequence and coordinate multiple disciplines to align with project commissioning sequence.

Management of Integrated Factory Acceptance Testing.

Construction/commissioning integrated schedule development

Leading development of pre-commissioning, commissioning, startup programs.

Interfacing with system operators.

Integration and startup of brownfield projects with new facilities.

Coordination with central control operators, inter-provincial operators, and international operating groups.

Oversight of performance verification and trial operations to demonstrate contract compliance.

Development and implementation of handover and warranty processes to support the owner.

Operational Readiness planning and implementation for owner operation and maintenance.

Support for the establishment of in-house HVDC & FACTS technical resources

Development/training of in-house personnel focusing on HVDC and FACTS systems

Mentoring of junior engineers.

Representing the company in industry association working groups.

Maintaining strong client and industry relationships.

Staying current with industry developments.

Responsible for compliance with company and site safety policies.

All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and 7 years of applicable experience required.

Master Degree in Engineering and 6 years of applicable experience required.

PhD in Engineering and 4 years of applicable experience required.

7 years of consulting, manufacturer or utility experience in HVDC transmissions and/or FACTS devices, design, operations and/or commissioning.

10 years or more experience is preferred.

Theoretical and practical knowledge of HVDC transmission and/or FACTS devices and their application/operation in power systems.

Experience with developing specifications for procurement of HVDC and FACTS technologies, including both LCC and VSC HVDC transmission technologies.

Demonstrated understanding of HVDC and FACTS project life cycles including procurement, design, construction, commissioning, operations, maintenance and refurbishment.

Experience completing conceptual design work as well as detailed design reviews as it relates to both HVDC transmission and FACTS.

Detailed understanding of HVDC and FACTS control systems, valves, cooling, filters, transformers etc.

Factory testing and site commissioning experience.

Understanding of plant auxiliary systems; AC and DC electrical supplies, HVAC, fire detection, cooling systems, telecommunications.

Understanding of HVDC and FACTS role with respect to integration of renewables and application of microgrids.

Understanding of HVDC cable technology and applications.

Electrical substation layout experience.

Expert knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures.

Strong knowledge of electrical equipment Codes and Standards and specific application related to HVDC transmission and FACTS systems.

Strong computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Experience with leading the discipline design for large projects and delegating work tasks to team members. Ability to lead execution of work and resolve issues in a team environment.

Demonstrated critical thinking skills, ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.

Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.

Ability to perform quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications.

Ability to travel. Willingness to travel domestically and internationally.

Ability to work with multidisciplinary teams.

Ability to work with minimum supervision.
