JOB BACKGROUND AND MISSION
As part of the
Together For Change
initiative led by Regeneron, Meharry Medical College and other pharmaceutical companies, YPIE will be replicating its proven science research/college success model with high school students in the Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS), preparing the next generation of independent researchers, scientists and medical professionals. YPIE’s existing NY-based Science Research Program provides students with access to independent research and science competitions, as well as college guidance and support so students successfully enroll in and graduate from four year colleges prepared to pursue careers in STEM, environmental science, healthcare and other competitive fields.

YPIE programs are focused on preparing students with the academic and life skills needed for college success. The more ready students are for college, the higher the likelihood they’ll succeed.
YPIE is seeking a Founding Research Program Director to:
Replicate YPIE’s Science Research Program in Nashville, TN through which students identify a topic, obtain lab placement, conduct original research, and present their research
Cultivate key relationships with Nashville Metro Public Schools and other local partners
Teach students key skills that will prepare them for college success, especially independent research skills in science and other STEM related fields
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES & RESULTS
Senior Leadership
Establish YPIE Nashville, a brand new site that will reflect the values, program model, entrepreneurial culture, and success of the original YPIE Yonkers site.
In partnership with the Executive Director, develop and manage an annual plan, program budget, calendar, and Yonkers-aligned operations system.
Establish key systems and processes that align with Tennessee requirements.
Develop an annual program budget, program plan and calendar.
Student Research Leadership
After-school group research classes:
Plan and execute daily after school research skills classes to prepare students to conduct original research. Ensure each student attends their group class four hours per week (twice a week/2 hours class), using the model established in NY to increase thinking and talking done by students, planning well-sequenced and engaging lessons toward academic objectives.
Grading:
Provide quarterly updates on grades for each student
Individual biweekly meetings:
Meet with every student one-on-one approximately twice a month ( ~40 mins ), creating individualized goals and action plans for student research.
Summer & expert support:
Cultivate volunteer mentors for student support and research placements, facilitating aligned summer opportunities for each student.
Science Fair Participation:
Prepare students for outward-facing competitions and events such as MTSEF, Regeneron Science Talent Search, and end-of-year symposium.
Partnerships & Communications
Cultivate and maintain relationships with Nashville community partners including:
the school district - high school and central office administrators and staff
students and families
business and government leaders
volunteers
Recruit a local Nashville Advisory Board to ensure successful programming and a clear, mission-aligned strategic direction.
Serve as a visible thought leader by participating in ongoing Nashville community engagement activities and meetings.
Collaborate with MNPS school partners to recruit 30 9th grade students each year for four years to participate in the program.
Secure an afterschool space where students will come together.
Family Engagement
Maintain active, collaborative relationships with key family figures in students' lives, coordinating to address students’ challenges and reinforce goals.
Facilitate meetings involving a family figure for each student.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS
To be eligible for consideration:
Experience in teaching, independent research methods, program design, science, health, environment or related field
Experience with and commitment to ensuring equity for a diverse population of students
Ability to navigate partnerships with diverse stakeholders
Ability to make arrangements for daily travel/transitions between program sites
Flexibility to work some evening and weekend hours as student needs arise
Proven organizational and program tracking skills
The most competitive applicants will possess:
Experience starting and/or leading a nonprofit organization and/or program
An outcomes-focused orientation
Experience working with, tracking, and analyzing data to target student support and evaluate effectiveness
Spanish fluency

Hours : Full-time
Salary range : $62,000 - $85,000
