FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE

The School Improvement Director provides on-site improvement services and support to Turnaround schools within the district that are Title I CSI/TSI. This position will support district leaders in their efforts to support schools in sustaining the school improvement efforts that yield positive student outcomes.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Works collaboratively with the school-based leadership team to develop and implement professional learning to support the needs of the school. Maintains on-going and frequent assistance to classroom teachers in lesson planning, critical thinking, and problem solving.

Keeps up to date with the most innovative pedagogical approaches.

Works collaboratively with federal programs to support the learning goals and student outcomes of the school.

Plans and assists the school leadership team for district and state improvement meetings.

Serves as the data coach to facilitate the management and interpretation of data necessary to support the development, implementation, and evaluation of Tiers 1, 2, and 3 interventions and the School Improvement Plan.

Provides job-embedded professional development based upon teacher and school needs.

Attends all MTSS district meetings and presents information to staff. Attends and represents instructional staff at NCDPI meetings that focus o closing gaps for various TSI subgroups.

Coaches, evaluates, and tracks the progress of the School Improvement Plan.

Monitors daily school operations that are related to school improvement and be able to provide constant feedback on progress to the School Turnaround Area Superintendent.

Performs related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of processes and procedures related to SIPs.

Knowledge of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.

Knowledge of data necessary to complete SIPs.

Knowledge of current legislature and mandates from NCDPI related to SIPs.

Knowledge WSFCS Strategic Plan in order to ensure that initiatives in SIPs are aligned with the district.

Knowledge of the principles of organization, administration, and personnel management.

Knowledge of the principles, methods, and practices of budgeting, finance, and governmental accounting to ensure that the department is operating efficiently, complying with laws, maintaining accurate record keeping, and making fiscally responsible decisions.

Knowledge of public school administration structures and challenges facing school districts.

Deep understanding of the school system environment and commitment to improving student achievement.

Demonstrates cultural competence and a deep understanding of and empathy for issues facing urban families.

Ability to analyze problems, proactively anticipate problems, construct back-up plans, identify alternative solutions, anticipate expected and unexpected consequences of proposed actions, and provide defensible explanations for issues.

Ability to deal with a multitude of issues and problems that unexpectedly arise.

Ability to work confidentially and with discretion.

Ability to maintain positive internal relationships with other WSFCS departments and staff members.

Ability to work cooperatively with parent groups, special education, and community agencies to assure seamless collaboration of efforts.

Ability to manage time, meet deadlines, prioritize projects, plan starting and ending deadlines, and successfully bring closure to projects.

Ability to communicate effectively orally in formal and informal venues to a variety of audiences and during day-to day conversations.

Ability to build and maintain strong relationships.

Ability to work successfully alone or on a team.

Ability to communicate effectively and accurately in writing in the form of reports, presentations, memos, internal and external letter, and e-mail correspondence.

Ability to differentiate issues that are time sensitive.

Ability to remove barriers or obstacles that make it difficult for principals to achieve their goals and ensure that school leaders have the resources they need to succeed.

Ability to make, support and explain recommendation and decisions.

Ability to interpret educational policies and procedures.

Ability to mentor, coach, train, and develop employees.

Skill in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Team Meetings as well as Google Drive and any other software used in conjunction with curriculum.

Strong leadership, organization, team, and interpersonal skills.

Skill in developing and conducting presentations.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum: Master’s Degree in Education, Public Administration, or Educational Administration and five years of increasingly responsible experience in teaching, supervision, and other leadership roles.

Desirable: Advanced or Doctorate in Education, Public Administration, or Educational Administration and seven years of increasingly responsible experience in coordinating roles around programs related to school quality

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:

NC certification in Administration, Administration and Leadership, Educational leadership, or School Principle preferred.

Valid driver’s license required.
