POSITION SUMMARY:

The Director of Teen & Advocacy will provide leadership, management, and supervision of high-quality youth and teen programming including, but not limited to, the Teen Center drop in, summer camps, civic engagement programs, life-skills programs, and teen specialty programs. The Director of Teen & Advocacy will work under the direction of the Senior Director of Youth Development and in accordance with Ann Arbor YMCA core values, Youth Development Practices, Diversity, Inclusion, and Global Initiatives, Character Development Framework, and Healthy Eating & Physical Activity Standards to develop and deliver innovative programming to youth and teens throughout the Y’s service area.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Provides direct leadership to assigned youth and teen programs and Camp Treetown, while providing in-direct support to all programs within the Youth Development department.

Responsible for the overall safety and wellbeing of respective youth program participants, staff, and volunteers while at all times enforcing all Ann Arbor YMCA policies rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures, and those for the prevention of child abuse.

Provides direct daily supervision to respective program staff, tracks and approves staff hours, manages and communicates staff schedule, and conducts frequent check-ins with program staff to ensure quality performance and programming.

Designs, implements, and evaluates assigned program curriculum that supports social-emotional, cognitive, and physical processes for all respective teen program participants and in collaboration with community stakeholders.

Responsible for the development and delivery of Teen Specialty Programming (including, but not limited to Youth Volunteer Corps (YVC) and teen leadership opportunities).

Works collaboratively with internal departments to achieve program, department, and organizational goals.

Fosters positive relationships with program participants, families, Ann Arbor Y Staff/Volunteers, partners, and community stakeholders to achieve desired results that align with organizational priorities and program goals.

Prepares, administers, and monitors program participant recruitment, registration, and collection of necessary participant data to support program goals and objectives.

Works with the Senior Director of Youth Development in the delivery of the on-boarding, training, and professional development opportunities for program staff & volunteers.

Works with the Senior Director of Youth Development in program advancement through grant writing processes and alternative funding opportunities.

Demonstrates sound judgement when dealing with daily issues in a variety of situations with program participants, parents, staff, volunteers, and community members.

Assists in the development of Standard Operating Procedures as it relates to youth & teen program operations.

Actively participates in required staff meetings, community events, trainings, workshops, conferences, etc. that enhance personal and professional growth and align with organizational and program goals.

Works with the Senior Director of Youth Development in the development and management of the annual department budget.

Responsible for executing related program budgets for respective teen programs and assists in reporting monthly program variances.

Assist with Ann Arbor Y special events and initiatives as requested.

As an Ambassador for the Y, communicates to members, volunteers, and the general public that the Y is the nation’s leading non-profit committed to strengthening the community through Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility.

Models and facilitates YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility with youth, colleagues, volunteers, and community members.

Job Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in education, human services, recreation or related field is required.

One to three years of YMCA experience in staff supervision is required.

Supervisory experience in a child related setting and program development experience strongly preferred.

Team Leader certification is preferred or commitment to attain within 2 years.

Must be capable of using MS Office software, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook.

Must be able to learn and use YMCA specific software within 30 days of employment.

Certifications in CPR & First Aid are required and must be maintained.

Must successfully pass background check and complete YMCA Child Abuse Safety training prior to employment.

Must have use of reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license.

Ability to obtain a chauffeur’s driver’s license is required.

Knowledge of traditional and non-traditional sports is preferred.

Understanding of program development, staff and volunteer training and development, budget development & fiscal management, and life spans of programs are a necessity.

Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills, organizational abilities, and initiative in program development.

Ability to communicate and listen effectively as well as a willingness to learn.

Demonstrated capacity and exposure working with diverse populations.

Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team.

Models relationship-building skills in all interactions.

Multi-lingual ability is preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Must be able to assist with restraint or physical support of youth weighing 180+ pounds as needed for safety during activities that may require stooping, kneeling or crouching.

May provide children with assistance with issues such as personal care.

Ability to walk, stand, and sit for long periods of time.

Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.

Must be able to lift and carry food and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.

Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours.

Position requires bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.

Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.

Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.

The worker may be subject to environmental conditions. Activities occur inside and outside.

POSITION FACTS:

Initial Hours of Responsibility (subject to change):

School-Year Programming: Monday – Friday, 9 am – 6 pm, some evenings and weekends, as necessary.

Summer Programming, Monday – Friday, 8 am – 5 pm.

Incumbent is expected to work 5 days per week during program hours (including evening program meeting times), and occasional weekends.
