The Johns Hopkins Special Pathogens Center is dedicated to preparedness, research and treatment of highly lethal infections and diseases of unknown origin. The center brings together the expertise of three distinct areas at Johns Hopkins Medicine -- clinical care, research and education -- to respond to special pathogens such as Ebola, Marburg, Lassa and novel respiratory pathogens. The JH Special Pathogens Center includes the Johns Hopkins Biocontainment Unit, one of 13 federally funded Regional Emerging Special Pathogens Treatment Centers (RESPTCs). The Center also includes the

Special Pathogens Training and Education Program (STEP)

which provides education and training for frontline hospitals and health systems throughout the US to prepare for high-consequence pathogen events. The research arm of the center has advanced the science of biocontainment with groundbreaking work on the decontamination of clinical infectious waste using steam sterilizers, human factors research to improve staff and patient safety, novel personal protective equipment (PPE) design and the role of the built environment in infection prevention. The Center also includes the

Johns Hopkins Precision Medicine Center of Excellence (PMCOE) for COVID-19 , which has conducted comparative effective studies on COVID-19 therapeutics, developed high-performing models to predict COVID-19 disease severity and examined racial disparities in pulse oximetry to improve health equity.The Director will supervise the coordination of patient care, research and educational activities under the Special Pathogens Center. The Director will collaborate with state and federal healthcare partners, colleagues at the other RESPTCs, the National Emerging Pathogen Training and Education Center (NETEC) and the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR) to set the national agenda on special pathogens preparedness and containment care, including the National Special Pathogens System (NSPS).REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS ( Reports to & Supervises)

Oversight of center activities including patient care, research and education.Supervise and collaborate with the Center's Director of Research to set the research agenda for the Center. The Center's vision is to be a national leader in research to advance the safe care of patients with highly infectious diseases.Supervise and work with the Center's Director of Education to set the education agenda for the Center. The Center's goals include providing education and support to healthcare personnel and facilities throughout ASPR Region 3 and being a national leader in educational materials and methods for the safe care of patients with highly infectious diseases.Supervise and work with the Center's Director of Operations to ensure BCU readiness to activate and to ensure the preparedness of The Johns Hopkins Hospital and The Johns Hopkins Health System to respond to a special pathogens event.Report to and work closely with the Johns Hopkins Hospital VPMA to define and achieve the Center's goals.Provide expertise and information regarding BCU preparedness to the President of The Johns Hopkins Hospital, the Vice President of Medical Affairs, Director of Emergency Management, and Senior Director of Infection Prevention as appropriate to ensure that the BCU is ready to respond to a special pathogens event.Supervise and work with the Administrative Director of the Center to ensure its ongoing financial viability including responding to RFAs and grant opportunities at the state and federal level.Supervise and work with the Administrative Director of the Center to address and optimize the day-to-day operations of the Center.Collaborate with national colleagues at ASPR and NETEC on the National Special Pathogens System (NSPS) to prepare the US for the next special pathogens event.Work with the Johns Hopkins Government Affairs team to advocate for resources to support pandemic and bio-threat preparedness at the state and federal levels.Partner with the Maryland Department of Health and other Region 3 public health officials to ensure that Maryland and Health and Human Services Region 3 are prepared for the next special pathogens event.Partner with MedStar Washington Hospital Center to coordinate and optimize HHS Region 3 and national preparedness.Qualifications

Education and QualificationRequired Qualifications, Experience & Knowledge:Requires a Medical Degree from an accredited Medical School or MD equivalent. Unrestricted license as M.D. If licensed outside of Maryland, must be willing to apply for a Maryland M.D.Academic rank of Associate Professor or higher.Requires a minimum of 5 years of clinical experience in either infectious diseases, critical care, or emergency medicine.Experience in highly infectious diseases and/or emergency preparedness.Demonstrated experience leading a multidisciplinary healthcare team.Application Instructions
