Black Hills State University is seeking applicants to fill a Director of Civic Engagement position.

DUTIES: Reporting directly to the Provost, this position will provide important early leadership in an exciting statewide initiative to improve civic engagement in South Dakota. The Director will help launch and lead the Center, the purpose of which is to provide undergraduate students with the foundation to succeed as lifelong citizens and future leaders in political, economic, and civic life. To advance this initiative, Black Hills State University will collaborate with the South Dakota Board of Regents (BOR) and the other public universities under the jurisdiction of the Board to: Develop and provide curricula and programs; Sponsor and host civic-focused events; Provide experiential-learning opportunities; Provide civic programming; Provide other resources in support of the Center. The Director will be instrumental in organizing, coordinating, and publicizing these activities.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Lead the Center for Civic Engagement. Design and facilitate civic-engagement programs, including faculty development workshops and professional learning communities. Collaborate with counterparts across the South Dakota BOR campuses. Publicize and market civics events in South Dakota. Develop a strategic plan for the Center. Work with academic programs and with the Student Success Center to improve the student experience at BHSU. Provide periodic updates and reports on the progress of the Center.

The successful candidate will possess: Decisive leadership, management, and organizational skills, with a leadership style that relies on motivation, creative problem-solving, and collaboration. Knowledge of curriculum development. Familiarity with national and state-level civic-engagement efforts and programming. Excellent writing and verbal communication skills. Ability to develop and maintain positive, collaborative relationships with faculty and staff, both on the BHSU campus and across the state of South Dakota. Ability to plan and implement projects and events. Ability to teach and develop courses in civics.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: A Master’s degree in a civics-related field, including communications, economics, history, philosophy, political science, or sociology. Prior experience with civics-related programming, particularly in a higher-education setting. University-level teaching experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: A doctoral degree in a civics-related field, including communications, economics, history, philosophy, political science, or sociology. Prior experience directing a civics-related program at a university or college. A full-time faculty appointment with teaching and course-development experience.
