Position Function:

The Middle School Athletic Director is responsible for coordinating, overseeing, and managing athletic activities offered for the school’s interscholastic athletic program. Reports to the Wy'east Middle School Administration; supervises all middle school coaching staff at Wy'east Middle School.

Essential Job Functions:

Recruit and monitor student participants, with a primary focus on increasing the number of students with economic and cultural barriers to participation; ensure Title 9 compliance.

Assist in the recruitment and selection of paid and volunteer coaches for the athletic program.

Assist with a master sports calendar that includes conference and non-conference games/events.

Schedule gym, building and athletic field use with the district facilities scheduler.

Coordinates and assigns gym and field use for practices and games.

Work with building administration, coaching staff and District Transportation to schedule all athletic departure times and provide bus supervision with trip sheets.

Schedule and confirm all officials for middle school contests.

Secure event supervisors for all athletic contests; ensure all volunteers have prior approval to volunteer.

Coordinate the collection of rosters for program information as needed.

Act as a resource person and coordinator for all Wy'east Middle School coaches and act as a liaison to align middle and high school athletic programs.

Assist in supervision at home athletic contests.

Secure and file paperwork for equipment requests involving the athletic department.

Evaluate all athletic programs on an annual basis. Make recommendations for improvement to the building principal and district athletic director.

Complete a written evaluation of each coach and hold a conference with all coaches within three weeks after the conclusion of their sport season.

Mediate the resolution of problems, issues, and concerns.

Provide for recruitment and in-service of volunteer coaching staff as needed.

Disseminate OSAA materials and enforce OSAA rules and regulations, including player eligibility.

Collect, file, and notify athletes and coaches regarding student eligibility as it pertains to the Hood River County School Athletic Code of Conduct including monitoring grades.

Attend athletic conference meetings.

Satisfactorily meet the requirements of the position.

Ensure all safety requirements and protocols are being met and enforced by District coaches, athletes and spectators at district sponsored activities and events.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Communication:

Establish and maintain the school’s athletics calendar.

Provide building staff with regular, clear and pertinent information about student athletic events and practices.

Facilitate ongoing communication with parents, boosters, community groups, and media regarding events and activities.

Work with volunteer coaches, students, staff, and parents to resolve concerns.

Clearly communicate with volunteer coaches, school staff, community, and parents, especially any schedule changes.

Financial Responsibilities:

Prepare a master budget and follow all District financial/monetary policies and procedures.

Supervise equipment inventories.

Coordinate monthly time sheets to the district office for payment of event supervisors, when applicable.

Job Qualifications:

Bachelors degree preferred, with administrative and/or coaching experience.

Working Knowledge of OSAA rules and regulations.

Work year: Extra duty contract/stipend.

Preferred Qualifications:

Leadership skills and experience working effectively with students, parents, and teachers.

Strong organizational skills.

Strong communication skills.

Experience working as an Athletic Director or Middle/High School Level Coach.

Bilingual ability in Spanish/English helpful.

Required testing:

Any offer of employment made by Hood River County School District to an external candidate is contingent upon satisfactory results of:

Drug screening tests for any illegal drug or substance classified in Schedules I through V under the

Federal

Controlled Substances Act, 21 U.S.C. 811 to 812.

Post-offer physical abilities assessment.

The Extra Duty salary is based on 8% of the 2024/25 Teacher Salary Schedule, Column BA, Level A-H. Step placement is determined by the Human Resources Department and is based on verified years of prior paid experience working as an Athletic Director. The amount listed below is the amount of the Extra Duty Contract for the entire year. It will be paid out over the remaining months of the school year, based on date of hire.
