I. INTRODUCTION

The University of Hawai‘i System has impressive strength and breadth in health sciences and medicine. Specifically, the University of Hawai'i at Manoa (UHM) offers more than 50 health sciences-related degrees and certificates across nine colleges and schools including the only medical degree in the Pacific; such programs host the largest social work, nursing, and public health programs in the state of Hawai'i. The overarching goals of the Institute are to establish a structure that provides a one-stop "portal" for information exchange and the unified voice for health sciences, education and research; strengthen and expand the healthcare workforce in Hawai'i and the Pacific through partnerships and pathways to careers and training supporting transdisciplinary work; and to lead in the convening of researchers, industry professionals, and government leaders to respond to health threats in Hawai'i and the Pacific.

II. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP

Provide leadership, expertise, and direction in developing and implementing strategies, procedures, and practices to advance the Institute, and build effective working relationships with internal and external groups and individuals.

Develop and articulate a clear and compelling vision and mission for the Institute that aligns with the University's overall strategic priorities and fosters excellence in health sciences research, education, and community engagement.

Lead the Institute as the clearinghouse and one-stop "portal" for information exchange and the unified voice for UH health sciences, education and research, and public health education.

Collaborate with key stakeholders, including Deans, Directors, faculty, researchers, staff, and external partners such as government officials, hospital executives, and community agencies, to identify and prioritize strategic initiatives that drive the Institute's growth, reputation, and fulfillment of its commitment to Hawai'i and the Pacific.

Convene and lead the Health Sciences Council, composed of the heads of the health sciences schools and colleges, and representatives from the state government, the healthcare systems, and the UH System to advise and guide the work of the Institute.

EXCELLENCE ACROSS THE HEALTH SCIENCES

Foster a culture of excellence across the UH health sciences research and education by promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and innovative approaches.

INSTITUTE MANAGEMENT

Provide effective leadership and management of the Institute's day-to-day operations, ensuring efficient utilization of resources and adherence to budgetary guidelines.

FUNDRAISING AND RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT

Lead fundraising efforts to secure external funding and philanthropic support, developing strategic partnerships with industry, government agencies, and private foundations.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND OUTREACH

Lead and promote the Institute's engagement and collaboration with the local community, healthcare organizations, and state, federal, and international government agencies to address public health challenges.

ADVOCACY AND REPRESENTATION

Represent the Institute in academic, professional, and public forums, acting as a spokesperson for the Institute's mission, achievements, and contributions to health sciences.

Perform other related duties as required.

III. MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENT

An advanced degree in a health sciences-related field or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Minimum of five (5) years of leadership experience in a higher education academic or research institution or the health sciences industry.

Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of related health science disciplines.

Strong demonstrated fundraising and resource development experience.

Demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion.

IV. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Earned doctoral degree.

Knowledge of UH Strategic Plan and applicable University of Hawai'i policies.

Knowledge of Hawaiian and Pacific Island history, culture, and values.
