ABOUT THIS POSITION

Summary:CMU's First Gen+ Support Center aims to empower students to thrive by providing comprehensive and holistic support, fostering academic and life skills, and creating an exceptional educational journey where every student can achieve their full potential. The TRIO Student Support Services Program, lives within this umbrella and is funded through the U.S. Department of Education and primarily serves first generation, low income, and/or students with disabilities. The TRIO Program Advisor is responsible for working with a caseload of students to develop individual educational plans and provide academic success services to help retain and graduate students. The TRIO Program Advisor collaborates with the Program Director to achieve the goals and objectives of the federally funded grant. The First Gen+ Support Center is housed within CMU's Enrollment Management Team under the Vice President of Student Services.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assists in the selection and recruitment of TRIO:SSS participants.

Develops and monitors individual 'academic snapshot and action plan' for participants.

Provides academic advising and coaching for participants.

Collaborates with the Program Director to offer student assessment, academic and graduate advising, financial aid counseling, budgeting support, and personal/professional development opportunities.

Provides career exploration and post-graduation planning.

Provides academic support and proactive interventions that encourages participant retention, graduation, and remaining in good academic standing.

Fosters a warm and welcoming environment for students to encourage them reach their academic goals.

Assists the Engagement Specialist with facilitation of workshops, supplemental instruction, travel opportunities, and other social and cultural enrichment activities for participants.

Coordinates services for program participants including, but not limited to, tutoring, course advisement and registration, graduate program enrollment, academic and financial aid counseling, disability services, peer mentoring, and developmental activities.

Participates in the evaluation of the SSS program and implements programmatic changes based on the results of the evaluation.

Maintains appropriate documentation and records, including participation and student contact records, in accordance with federal and college regulations to support evaluation and reporting efforts.

Stays informed of federal regulations governing TRIO:SSS programs.

Represents the university at state, and occasionally regional, and/or national TRIO association meetings.

Works effectively and collaborates with other offices and personnel on campus that interact with the First Gen+ Support Center.

Flexibility to participate in occasional evening or weekend programming. Possible out-of-state travel, while rare, may be required for student experiential learning or training purposes.

Minimum Qualifications Required:

• Bachelor's degree in education, psychology, counseling, social work, or related field.

• One to two years' experience in higher education, secondary education, counseling, or related field.

• Experience in academic advising, mentoring, counseling, coaching, supplemental instruction, and/or teaching underserved students.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in retention strategies including First Year Experience, academic advisement, goal setting, campus involvement, networking and career development, financial aid/financial literacy, and graduate school admission process.

• Experience in supplemental instruction, study skills, time/stress management, mental health resource awareness, and test-taking strategies.

• Demonstrated experience documenting outcomes, conducting assessments, and detailed record management.

• TRIO program experience and/or a background similar to TRIO participants preferred.

Additional Skills:

• Proficient with Microsoft 365 such as Word, Excel, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, etc. Preferred experience in Banner, Slate, Student Access, and/or other CRM software systems.

• Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and clearly both verbally and in writing, and work with people at all levels diplomatically and professionally.

• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.

• Possess strong critical thinking skills to help students solve problems and develop success strategies.

• Possess strong attention to detail.

• Possess a valid driver's license.

Salary:
