Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird seeks an Attorney for the Criminal Appeals Section.

Description:

Attorneys in this section primarily handle appeals from criminal proceedings, juvenile delinquency findings, and sexually violent predator commitments. Criminal Appeals attorneys deal with a vast array of issues that affect everyday-Iowans, whether through preserving a conviction or ruling, taking a “state’s appeal,” or conducting motion practice before the Iowa Supreme Court. They also advise on extradition matters, review legislation, give legal training, speak at conferences, and counsel local prosecuting attorneys.

No other group of lawyers appears more frequently before Iowa’s appellate courts. They also practice in the federal district courts, the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court. As the premier specialists in criminal appellate practice, lawyers in this section enjoy the esteem of justices, appellate judges, and county prosecutors.

Requirements and Preferences:

Candidates must have a passion for appellate practice, public service, and prosecution. The most competitive applicants will have excellent academic credentials, superb writing skills, and a combination of experience as a judicial clerk, a member of a law review, or prior appellate practice.

This position requires a license, or the ability to obtain a license, to practice law in Iowa. Candidates must pass a criminal and ethics background check.
