Description:The Public Utilities Bureau represents the People of the State of Illinois with respect to all laws governing public utilities, including electricity and natural gas (energy), water, and telecommunications services. The principal aim of the Bureau is protecting ratepayers from policies and decisions that increase rates or that negatively affect consumers.Responsibilities:

Bureau attorneys are engaged on a daily basis in consumer advocacy in the regulation of utility rates and service. They apply the Public Utilities Act, actively participate in administrative proceedings before the Illinois Commerce Commission that set prices and rules governing utility practices, participate in federal energy regulation, develop the Attorney General’s policies on energy, water, and communications issues, and evaluate and propose state legislative initiatives. They advocate for Illinois’ utility consumers on issues such as rates, service quality, energy efficiency, renewable energy development and funding, company business practices, mergers, and competition.Qualifications:Applicants must be licensed in Illinois at the time of application and have a strong commitment to public service. Candidates should have an interest in complex litigation and be willing to promote regulatory policies on behalf of consumers. While background in public utilities or a comparable highly regulated field is helpful, dedication to consumer advocacy is more important.
