Job Duties
Western State Hospital is seeking a P14 PRN Primary Care Nurse Practitioner to provide medical evaluation and care for patients at WSH with acute and chronic medical problems.
Hours are: 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. as needed.
This position will:
- provide medical care for assigned unit(s)- perform and document medical evaluations, including comprehensive medical histories and physicals and complaint directed histories and physicals for patients. This includes review of previous medical records and current diagnostic studies- provide treatment for patients with acute and chronic medical conditions or changes in same- order and interpret routine diagnostic studies- develop and document working diagnoses and treatment plans for patients with acute and chronic medical conditions or changes in same- track studies, consults, and ongoing chronic preventative care needs- obtain and document necessary consents for treatment- discuss with patients and family medical issues and treatment provided- develop medical treatment plans in collaboration with attending psychiatrist/NP for patients with a complex med/psych interface- collaborate with the supervising physician and seek consultation/referral when acute or chronic medical conditions fail to adequately respond to treatment- refer patients to appropriate outside licensed physicians, clinics, or other heath care providers for the purpose of specialty )OB, dermatology, etc.) management or consultation as clinically directed

Our strategic philosophy is to provide valued service, to look forward and anticipate challenges and opportunities, to actively educate the public, and to be open and welcoming to the media. Our services include Admissions and Psychosocial Rehab, Special programs for Deaf and a Med/Psych unit.
Western State Hospital maintains collaboration with UVA, training residents/medical students and recruiting psychiatrists into public sector mental health. Faculty provide supervision to students and students on rotation, and participate in core didactic presentations in residency programs at UVA. Primary Care services are provided by board certified physicians in Family and Internal Medicine, NPs, and PAs.

Minimum Qualifications
- completion of approved nurse practitioner training course and current certification- current, unrestricted RN and NP licenses in the Commonwealth of Virginia- knowledge of and experience with Primary Care medicine at the nurse practitioner level with training in physical diagnosis, pathology, and medical therapeutics
