Primary Responsibility:

The Division Chief-Detentions is a law enforcement administrator that also performs general law enforcement work to enforce Local, State, and Federal laws and to safeguard the lives, property, and rights of the residents and visitors of Gilpin County.Supervised by:

Undersheriff. In absence of Undersheriff, use chain of command established by Gilpin County Sheriff's Office.Supervises:

Oversees Detentions, Court Security personnel, and Kitchen staff.

Salary Range:

E10 - $108,700 - $157,700

Hiring Range:

$108,700 - $133,200 DOQ

Main Job Duties:

Manages the daily operations of the Detention Divisions to include transport, court security, and kitchen. In the absence of the Undersheriff, exercises all delegated responsibilities for the Gilpin County Sheriff's Office.

Maintains all inmate fund accounts and general fund accounts. Balances all accounts associated with the Detention Division.

Tracks maintenance records of the Sheriff’s Office and follows up with the Maintenance Department to ensure all issues are fixed.

Researches, prepares, and organizes the proposed Detention budget requests for the year. Oversees the approved budget upon approval by the Sheriff and County Commissioners.

Manages and reports statistical information to the State of Colorado and Federal Data Collections Systems.

Prepares and keeps accurate records of all invoices.

Formulates, reviews, and enforces the Detention Division policies and procedures. Reviews all policies to maintain acceptable standards and practices for the divisions.

Formulates and reviews Detention, including Court Security and Kitchen division job descriptions to maintain acceptable standards and practices for the designated jobs.

Oversees all programs in the Detentions Division for the inmates.

Oversees and approves all training for Detentions staff, including civilian and certified personnel.

Completes testing for the Detentions Division and assists other divisions when needed.

Coordinates, prepares, and maintains the schedule for the Detentions Division.

Provides professional leadership, direction, and supervision to assigned staff; disciplines staff; makes recommendations to the Undersheriff regarding the hiring, qualification, promotion, termination, and demotion of employees. Guides, trains, develops, and coaches employees in the accomplishment of their duties and professional goals.

Establishes and maintains a well-organized recordkeeping system concerning employee files, vendors, funds management, etc.

Prepares and manages all grants for the Detentions Division. Researches new grant opportunities.

Serves as one of the liaisons to Colorado POST and training auditor and compliance for the Sheriff’s Office, including data entry into the POST portal for all certified Gilpin County personnel.

Assigns, tracks, reviews, and monitors evaluations to be completed on Detention and Kitchen employees and completes evaluations on employees.

Maintains contracts with vendors associated with the Detention Division. Reviews and ensures all services are complete.

Oversees the integrity of access to the Gilpin County Detention Facility.

Prepares various logs, monthly statistics, forms, and reports.

Listens to appeals of grievance allegations of inmates.

Attends seminars, classes, lectures, etc., as appropriate, to enhance and maintain knowledge of trends and developments in the field of law enforcement.

Additional Job Duties:

Performs other appropriate duties as assigned by the Undersheriff or Sheriff and any duties needed to stabilize an emergency situation.

Provides backup support for Detention, Patrol, Victim Services, and Dispatch Divisions.

Takes persons into custody on arrest warrants and makes arrests based on probable cause.

Maintains cleanliness of assigned workstation, uniform, and weapon.

Provides basic medical attention in emergencies, including CPR, as required.

Maintains proficiency standards in the use of firearms.

Oversees and coordinates staffing and budgetary items with the Kitchen Manager.

Hours:

Must be able to respond quickly to any Sheriff’s Office incident and provide supervision for all shifts.

Must be available for call-outs on special assignments designated by the Undersheriff or Sheriff.
