Purpose of Associate Residency Music Director:

This position is responsible for ensuring high quality musical accompaniment and music direction for classes and performances in the statewide Residency Program. The Residency Music Director is responsible to the Associate Outreach Music Director and Residency Artistic Director for carrying out the mission of the organization with excellence and is a member of the organization's Artistic Staff.

This is a part-time, non-exempt/hourly position. This role requires significant travel in the state of New Mexico during the school year. Mileage, per diem, and lodging is provided.

Primary Responsibilities:

Accompanying Residency Program Classes:

Accompanies classes in Residency Program: In-School, Advanced Teams, and Event-related rehearsals 16-19 weeks per year.

Collaborates and receives direction from Associate Outreach Music Director and Residency Artistic Director to plan and implement music materials for Residency program classes.

Creates arrangements and sheet music and original music as needed for Residency assemblies.

Collaborates and receives direction from NDI New Mexico Teaching Artists on music needs.

Edits recorded music as needed for rehearsals and performances.

Participates in Teaching Excellence Workshop and other enrichment/training activities for artistic staff.

Accompanies Outreach Summer Institute (3-week summer program in home city).

Accompanies rehearsals and performances for related special events, rehearsals, and performances in home city as needed.

Available to substitute or assist apprentice pianists as needed.

Directing Residency Event Bands:

Rehearses Residency bands, including preparing necessary materials in collaboration with the Associate Outreach Music Director (Associate Outreach Music Director hires and contracts musicians).

Conducts band in dress rehearsals and performances - approximately 5-7 performances/year.

Works with Technical Directors (NDI New Mexico and community technical directors/liaisons at Residency sites) to ensure that the technical needs of the band are met and that the performances have high sound quality.

General Duties:

Collaborates with Program Artistic Directors and Music Directors to ensure that the organization's mission and artistic needs are met.

Attends all enrichment workshops and meetings, including Outreach program meetings.

Compiles and maintains program reference materials, including event scores in coordination with other Music Directors.

Upholds HR policies and procedures.

Other duties as needed.

Working Conditions, Environment and Physical Requirements:

Functions performed in a variety of environments including: NDI New Mexico offices, schools, and other locations.

Requires reliable transportation and reimbursable in-state travel to NDI New Mexico locations, participating schools, residency sites, and community events.

Requires weekend and evening hours.

May require lifting up to 25 lbs.

May be required to navigate stairs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

Job Specific Requirements:

Minimum 2-5 years of experience in job-related duties - experience organizing, directing, and playing for professional performances.

Experience with music/audio editing software and music notation software.

Minimum 1-2 years of experience playing in NDI New Mexico programs preferred.

College level education preferred.

Flexibility in work schedule.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Excellent organizational skills.

Desire to work in arts education field.
