Position SummaryThe Director of Donor Relations for Principal Gifts is a leader on the Donor Relations team in the Office of University Advancement at William & Mary. The Director will design and deliver best-in-class engagement strategies that inform and inspire donors and prospects who support W&M at the highest levels.

The Director is the strategic leader of a comprehensive donor relations program for principal gift prospects and donors at William & Mary. This includes donor cultivation, stewardship and recognition as well as impact reporting. The Director reports to the Executive Director of Donor Relations and collaborates with the President’s office.

The Director manages the James Blair Society, William & Mary’s premier giving society, which recognizes individuals, corporations and foundations that have made cumulative lifetime gifts of $1 million or more to the university. The Director works closely with the Assistant Vice President of Principal Gifts & Gift Planning and the principal gifts team and supports gift officers across the university in creating and executing individualized engagement plans for donors and prospects of $1 million and above.

The Director will help foster a culture of belonging that embraces all people and perspectives. This position is based in Williamsburg, Virginia, and offers a flexible work environment.

Conditions of Employment

This position may require you to work additional hours beyond the typical work week, to include evenings and weekends.

This is a restricted position subject to availability of funding.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.

Significant and progressively responsible professional experience and specialized expertise directly related to the duties of this role (typically 4-8 years).

Extensive experience in donor relations and in dealing directly with donors (typically 7 to 10 years).

Significant experience in managing donor stewardship and communications programs, platforms and project management systems (typically 4-8 years).

Strong planning and project management skills with the ability to identify, schedule, and track short and long-range goals, measurable results, and key performance indicators.

Strong analytical skills with the ability to source, organize, and leverage data and produce reports to inform program enhancements and optimization of personnel and budget resources using a relational database or Customer Relationship Management software (CRM).

Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communications skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse and principal-level audiences.

Proficiency in coordinating multiple assignments with competing deadlines and managing a team that works in concert to produce high-quality programs.

Experience (typically 2-4 years) related to non-profit fundraising, special events, meeting planning, and/or public relations.

Preferred Qualifications

Proficient in best practices in stewardship and donor relations including analysis, assessment, and evaluation.

Experience in a higher education setting.

Remote Work EligibilityHybrid (works remotely at least 1 day per week but not full-time)

Advertised Pay RangeUp to $100,000, commensurate with experience
