Job Summary

The Graduate Assistance Director will serve as a central resource primarily focused on supporting and delivering the academic and career success programs and services for members of the graduate community. The Graduate Assistance Director provides impartial, informal, independent, and confidential services to members of the graduate community seeking assistance to resolve questions and concerns affecting their relations with others within the institution and/or the institution itself. Services provided include explanations of academic policies and procedures of the Graduate School, university, college, or unit; review of available options for information and formal complaint resolution; one-on-one consultation and group facilitation; coaching for conflict resolution; group training for optimizing graduate student success; referrals to relevant on- and off-campus resources (including for mental health, employment and financial support, and professional development); updating and publicizing relevant resources; and other services as appropriate. The position will serve as a core member of the Office of Graduate Assistance staff.

Responsibilities

Listen to concerns as a first point of contact for the Office of Graduate Assistance; clarifies issues to develop initial plans for resolution; empowers individuals to manage and engage in conflict constructively; assist with the interpretation and navigation of institutional policies and procedures; gathers additional information; help individuals explore informal and formal pathways to address or raise concerns; facilitate one-on-one and group conversations; provide relevant information; and serve as a strategic thought partner and coach to help resolve academic concerns.

Serve as a central resource primarily to graduate and professional students and assist them in determining the viability of their complaints and issues as they related to university rules and policies. Direct graduate and professional students to appropriate offices, committees, and resources, and make them aware of relevant institutional rules and policies. Refer individuals to other institutional resources as needed. Serve as a liaison between the Office of Graduate Assistance and other entities providing direct services or consultation to graduate and professional students.

Cultivate positive work relationships with colleagues and campus partners in campus-wide, College, and academic unit efforts to promote an inclusive and equitable climate and culture that promotes the retention and success of graduate and professional students.

Identify emerging institutional issues, new systems, best practices, and related opportunities that might enhance student adjustment and persistence.

Assist with correspondence/meetings/presentations to College, unit-level, and other groups interested in using resources relevant to Office of Grad Assistance.

Assist in development, launch, & maintenance of initiatives that prevent poor adjustment/promote positive adjustment to the graduate experience at Purdue.

What We're Looking For:

Master's degree in higher education administration, program management, human resources, or social/behavioral sciences (e.g., social work, counseling, or other human service oriented field) program delivery.

Two or more years of experience in higher education and/or relevant field (especially overseeing/administering programs geared towards recruiting, mentoring, or supporting graduate students).

Previous experience working with graduate and/or professional students.

Previous experience in university governance, familiar with university rules and policies, prevalent norms within the institution, precedent, and established graduate policies and operating procedures, especially as they pertain to graduate and professional education.

Experience providing effective conflict management and resolution services.

Experience working with a range of individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds that affect retention and success in contemporary graduate education.

Demonstrated active listening skills; interpersonal flexibility and adaptability; diplomatic and collaborative approach.

Strong problem-solving, time-management, and organizational skills.

Clear oral and written communication capabilities for diverse individuals and small group audiences.

What Is Helpful:

Doctoral degree.

Ability to interpret and convey academic policies and procedures.
