Under the supervision of the Director of the ONDAS Student Center in the Office of Teaching & Learning, the Assistant Director is responsible for assisting the Director in developing and implementing research-based mentoring programs, workshops, and other learning support opportunities for first-generation college students and other minoritized student populations in the ONDAS Student Center.The Assistant Director oversees the daily operations, supervises undergraduate students, supports Center volunteers, and communicates regularly with ONDAS Student Center users. The Assistant Director cultivates relationships with students, staff, faculty, and personnel across campus and helps to coordinate activities with other campus units and student organizations. The Assistant Director also oversees designs, editing, production, and circulation of print and web material for all center activities and supports evaluation and assessment of ONDAS Student Center activities.Specific Responsibilities Include:Programs and Workshops

Organizes and coordinates activities related to programs and workshops offered through the Center by academic departments, Student Affairs offices, student organizations, and peer mentors. Has familiarity with, and stays current on, literature and best practices for supporting student success and regularly assesses students' needs in order to develop relevant support structures in the Center. Independently and in collaboration with OSC staff, develops and oversees workshops for UCSB students, staff, and faculty. Workshops will fulfill a variety of goals that include: facilitating student transition to UCSB; creating opportunities for students to build community; acquainting students with the range of available campus support services; providing assistance with academic skills; assisting students in gaining research experience; preparing students for internships and related opportunities; introducing post-degree opportunities and preparation pathways (including graduate and professional school participation). Staff and faculty workshops will address professional development opportunities related to working with first-generation college students and other minoritized student populations. Assesses the effectiveness of programming and related activities and coordinates regular institutional review and reporting.Mentoring & Training

Supervises a staff of undergraduate peer mentors, and occasionally supervises interns, in addition to providing support and guidance to Center volunteers. Responsible for ongoing hiring, education, training, and development of the peer mentors. Creates a supportive work environment, facilitates staff professional development, and conducts regular staff evaluations to assess progress. Works closely with the Director on related peer mentoring programs in order to continuously incorporate appropriate best practices. Close collaboration with the Transfer Student Center, Successful Student Transitions, Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities, and Educational Opportunity Program staff.Coordinating Services

Works closely with relevant campus offices in order to arrange drop-in services and programming in the Center. Partnerships might include managing Faculty Office Hours, College of Letters & Science Academic Advising, and collaborations with the Transfer Student Center, Campus Learning Assistance Services, Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships, Educational Opportunity Program, Career Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, and Health & Wellness, Food Security and Basic Needs among others. Management of these services and programs also includes effective advertising to students and maintaining regular data collection and reporting regarding the effectiveness of services/workshops.Campus and Public Relations

Undertakes a variety of efforts to raise visibility of the Center and increase student participation in Center activities. In charge of Marketing & Media efforts and initiatives including print, online, and social media formats, but also outreach workshops and presentations in a wide variety of venues. Oversees production of Center newsletters and assists the Director in developing annual reports. Coordinates photography and video production for marketing use. Works closely with Peer Mentors to carry out these activities. Coordinates regular data collection and reporting regarding the effectiveness of marketing efforts.Data, Evaluation, and Assessment

Oversees and maintains data collection of Center usage and activities to measure efficacy of Center programs and services. Trains graduate student mentors and peer mentors to assist in the data collection process. Works with the Director and other unit staff to develop evaluation and assessment tools to analyze the effectiveness of programming and other Center activities. Assists Director in developing reports related to Center activities.Administrative and Logistical

Responds to and manages Center inquiries (online and face-to-face) and provides excellent service to students, staff, faculty, administrators, and visitors. In absence of Director, represents the department to the campus community, provides leadership, and offers decision-making authority. Creates peer mentor schedules and approves time cards; assumes front desk duties when staff shortages are experienced; responds to and manages requests from student groups and partners to use Center facilities; manages inventory and purchases of Center supplies; assists in managing Center budget for events and programs; Reports on programming budget to the Director; oversees Center Lounge; coordinates the dissemination of emergency goods and resources for students in need who access the Center; and purchases food and supplies from local stores/restaurants to support programs. Trains Center staff to support these efforts.The University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, and service as appropriate to the position.
