Position Focus:

Reporting to the Dean, The Gallery Exhibition Manager (GEM) is responsible for managing all aspects of installation and overseeing the daily operations of the School of Art’s exhibition spaces. Will work with faculty members in the design, coordination, and execution of installations and with MFA and BA students on the logistics and installation of their shows. The GEM is responsible for working with artists and exhibition curators toward realizing their projects as well as overseeing the maintenance and the general condition of physical spaces. Procures and maintains inventories of supplies, plans, and manages opening receptions and related events during active exhibition periods. As the School of Art seeks to expand exhibition programming to include extra-curricular exhibitions of non-students and artists, the GEM will be responsible for working with curators, collectors, staff, galleries, institutions, and artists to obtain artwork and complete loan and insurance forms, data and images required or requested for exhibitions, events, and catalogs. Manage art shipments to ensure the works arrive and depart safely and by specific dates. Oversee inventory, registration, art release, and mail services for artworks; prepare and review loan agreements and prepare shipping documents and art industry insurance valuation lists. The GEM will be hands-on during installation and serve as a mentor when training, demonstrating, and installing alongside staff and students to ensure that exhibitions fulfill the school’s mission and are executed at the highest level of professional conduct and practice. Supervise, train, and support installation crews and student installation crews regarding gallery/exhibition best practices for artwork registration, handling, and exhibition installation. Create and maintain training manual for art handling and installation and serve as a resource for staff and students in this area. Organize and facilitate student gallery orientations. Oversee the upkeep of galleries and all related facilities, including lobby, galleries, and offsite storage. Monitor gallery climate and humidity levels. Conduct regular exhibition checks for security, damage, cleaning, and lighting needs. Maintain inventory of necessary supplies, tools, A/V equipment. Prepare departmental budget and be responsible for managing, processing, and tracking expenses, once approved. Work to create and sustain a positive and collaborative culture so that the Yale School of Art is always welcoming to our community through its public programs and facilities. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Essential Duties:

Assumes primary responsibility for a program, service, activity, operation or function in an assigned area. Develops objectives, practice and procedure and identifies resources to ensure accomplishment of operational goals.

Designs and implements quality control metrics to identify areas of risk. Analyzes, recommends, and implements strategic solutions to minimize risk.

Develops a variety of complex report and other written materials.

Provides guidance to and collaboration with internal and external partners as necessary.

Develops, oversees and monitors budgets.

Develops and maintains specialized training.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree in related field and three (3) years of related demonstrated experience or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, students, and other professionals. Ability to work with a diverse artist population. Ability to be flexible and maintain a positive professional attitude in a dynamic and creative setting and discretion in handling confidential and sensitive matters.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Demonstrated knowledge of registrar and best practices in art handling.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Demonstrated initiative and administrative ability as required to work with and understand the goals of a small, part-time/contracted support team in formulating and implementing an ambitious program of temporary exhibitions and events.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Demonstrated knowledge in quality data collection to ensure adequacy, accuracy and legitimacy of data in educational systems with the ability to strictly follow data privacy & security procedures. Proven experience with data handling and analysis to ensure adherence to legal and institutional standards.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Demonstrated experience working with and understanding the needs of artists and designers.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Demonstrated experience working directly with artists on exhibition installation. Demonstrated experience working in a higher education working with student artists. Proficiency with basic carpentry, painting, and power tools. Ability to use scissor lifts and climb ladders.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift 50lbs.
