GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Pitzer is hiring for an Associate Director or Director for CAPAS (Center for Asian Pacific American Students). CAPAS provides programs and services that focus on Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) issues for a multicultural campus community. The Director is responsible for providing strategic support to all APIDA students overseeing the Center’s daily operations, serving as a resource and facilitating programs for APIDA students, raising awareness of issues affecting the APIDA community, training and developing student leaders.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Acts as the Student Affairs administrator with the responsibility of supporting the interests of Asian, Asian American and Pacific Islanders. Develop strategic plans aligned with Pitzer’s mission and values.
Provide support and guidance to APIDA students in navigating college, family and personal issues, academic support, professional development opportunities and racial identity development. Provide referrals to academic support services, health services, counseling and other resources when needed.
Develop programs and activities designed to build awareness of the APIDA culture, history and identity. Provides collaborative leadership and administrative oversight of the Center. Determine needs and develop long-term goals and objectives for the Center. Develop learning outcomes and regularly assess student learning as it relates to CAPAS programs.
Identify and develop specialized programming specifically aimed at supporting First Generation APIDA students at creating a strong sense of belonging and support network.
Oversee the Center’s daily operations including selection, training, scheduling and payroll for student staff personnel.
Responsible for planning and coordinating major events, and developing and maintaining the resources in CAPAS, including the website.
Advise various Pitzer and consortium student groups and programs that foster intercultural understanding through APIDA issues, including the Pasifika Asian Student Union.
Serve on various committees and represent CAPAS and APIDA student interests including our First Gen committee. Participate in the formulation of policies through the Diversity Committee and Academic Standards Committee.
Work collaboratively with colleagues in Student Affairs on student activities programming on APIDA issues that fosters intercultural understanding for all Pitzer students.
Assist with the College-wide effort to improve student retention, persistence and graduation for all students, particularly First Generation APIDA students. Support Admission Office in recruitment of APIDA students when needed.
Establish strong working relationships with consortium shared services and cultural centers to provide programming to bring awareness to intersectional issues.
Collaborate and partner with faculty and staff to support the well-being and academic success of APIDA students, including engaging in CARE Team Meetings.
Establish relationships with APIDA alumni to support CAPAS programming and career development opportunities, in collaboration with Alumni & Family Engagement and Career Services.
Create opportunities for connections with APIDA community-based organizations.
Plan and facilitate various workshops on APIDA issues including, but not limited to: sexism and gender, intersectionality, inter-ethnic relations, cross-cultural and cross-racial relations and identity development.
Prepare budget and budget forecasts for approval, monitor expenditures and prepare recommendations on facilities, equipment and staffing requirements.
Coordinate administrative operations of CAPAS, including provision of records, assessment of programs, production of reports or other information or data as needed.
Liaison with appropriate faculty and/or staff of one or more colleges, departments, offices, committees and/or outside sources for conducting and planning related CAPAS activities and informing APIDA students of resources and opportunities.
Perform other related duties as required.
Basic Qualifications:
Associate Director : A bachelor’s degree, or any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Master’s degree in Asian American Studies, Higher Education, Student Affairs, or related field preferred. Must have at least two to five years of full-time work-related experience with at least one year’s supervisory experience.
Director : Master’s degree in Asian American Studies, Higher Education, Student Affairs, or related field is required. Must have at least five to seven years of full-time work-related experience with at least three years supervisory experience.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with APIDA students.
Demonstrated and specialized knowledge and experience working with First Generation college students.
Experience leading student groups taking a holistic approach to student development.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
Excellent communication skills in English, both oral and written.
Ability to work with budgets and manage department accounts.
Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team. Must be able to work effectively and cordially with a diverse community.
Ability to be proactive and work effectively and productively without close supervision.
Demonstrated experience planning all stages of student summer enrichment programs and retreats preparing students on how to navigate college life.
Computer proficiency, including latest versions of Microsoft Office Word, Outlook and Excel.
Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
Licenses/Certifications:
A valid driver’s license and a driving record acceptable to the College’s insurer are preferred.
Supervisory Responsibility:
Responsible for the supervision of student employees, including employee relations, selection, training, development in compliance with institutional policies, and affirmative action/equal employment opportunity requirements.
Time Type:
Full-time, 40 hours
Annual Pay Schedule:
12 (11-month option available)
Work Schedule:
The regular hours for this position are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. These hours may vary due to needs of the College or department. Some evening and weekend work may be required.
