Position OverviewThe Managing Director, Development will focus on establishing multi-year contributions, identifying new funding sources and management of current donors. The Managing Director, Development (MDD) will oversee a team that will be responsible for achieving the site’s fundraising goals including major gift solicitation, grant writing, event planning, as well as the site’s external communications and marketing efforts. The MDD will serve on the site leadership team, helping to drive and support site-wide initiatives and projects.

Job DescriptionStarting Compensation Range: $90,000 - $115,000 commensurate with experience.

RESPONSIBILITIESThe principle responsibilities of the Managing Director of Development are:

Ensure the site meets its annual fundraising budget goals, with a focus on achieving over 2.4 million in revenue from private sources annually.

Develop and implement the processes and structures needed to secure current and future financial needs.

Lead a six-person development team.

Fundraising Strategy and ExecutionEstablish short and long-range goals for restricted and unrestricted funding sources, while leading the team in developing strategies to approach donors, including the cultivation of new donors (i.e. donor outreach and engagement and helping to increase the pipeline of new private sector business).

In partnership with the Executive Director, Board Members, and the City Year headquarters’ development office, develop and implement a strategic and diversified fundraising plan that meets current goals and anticipates future needs and growth objectives.

Manage a development team that is responsible for following a strategic plan, resulting in the execution of a $2.4+ million fundraising campaign.

Oversee the planning and implementation of special events to raise the awareness of City Year, fundraise and engage individuals, foundations, and corporations as champions and donors.

Major Gift / Donor Support

Develop innovative strategies to promote and increase individual giving.

Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of current and future major donors.

External Relations

Oversee the Communications and Marketing Manager in the overall execution of a communications and marketing strategy including: planning and implementation of communications and public relations activities, production of promotional materials, and overseeing web content management.

Work with the Executive Director and Board Chairs to develop a Development Committee that supports the outreach and fundraising of board members.

Financial Reporting

Oversee the requirements and processes for reporting accurate revenue.

Manage revenue budgets and event budgets.

Provide monthly and as needed revenue reports to Executive Director, Board, and Headquarters staff.

Corporate and Foundation Management

Manage the identification and cultivation of new corporate and foundation partnerships, as well as the grant proposal and reporting processes.

In collaboration with Director of Development, build City Year’s Team Sponsorship through identifying and securing new Team Sponsors.

Organizational Initiatives

Help shape organizational strategy and play a leadership role in implementing the site’s local operating plan.

Participate in City Year national and local portfolio groups on topics of interest.

Serve as site representative with City Year Milwaukee’s Associate Board.

Assume other tasks as delegated by the Executive Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

Development/Fundraising: Experience leading major giving campaigns and success securing fundraising from multiple local donor markets.

Project Leadership: Experience in planning, leading, and managing development projects.

Entrepreneurial Spirit: Takes initiative and actively seeks to deepen current donor relationships.

Communications: Skilled in creating compelling written and oral communications for fundraising asks.

Influencing: Gets others to accept ideas by using convincing arguments.

Relationship Building: Skilled at cultivating meaningful relationships that result in securing multi-year support.

People Management: Ability to build and lead a diverse team to meet individual, team and site goals.

Direct experience with Development/Fundraising; advanced degrees considered.

Experience serving and advocating for under-resourced populations, preferably in an educational setting.
