Holistic Livestock Manager

Apricot Lane Farms is a 234-acre farm integrated within a reawakened ecosystem. With a team that makes the seemingly impossible possible, the farm regeneratively grows more than 200 varieties of fruits and vegetables, and raises sheep, cows, pigs, chickens and ducks with care and respect while working in harmony within a dynamic ecosystem. We are looking for a very experienced Livestock and Poultry Manager to oversee the day-to-day responsibilities of our animal program.

Summary

Our program utilizes biodynamic and rotational grazing practices. Equally as important to caring for the livestock is caring for the land and soil on which they are raised. The Holistic Livestock Manager oversees all aspects of the daily care, feeding, and life support system maintenance of our diverse collection of animals including cows, sheep, pigs, goats, egg-laying chickens, meat chickens, egg-laying ducks, guardian dogs, and a horse. The Livestock and Poultry Manager reports directly to the Founding Farmer, John Chester.

Job Responsibilities

Responsible for the day-to-day operations of our animal program which includes livestock and poultry:

Perform daily tasks including, but not limited to, tending to the water and food of all livestock and poultry; weighing, sorting and tagging animals; moving animals within rotational grazing plan through pastures and orchards; organizing supplies; building & moving electrical fences; monitoring grass levels; cooperating with the pastured poultry team; and mucking stalls.

Manage the Livestock and Poultry Teams in their daily activities; maintain records and develop yearly program plans.

Assist and facilitate the vetting of animals.

Perform mowing, fertilizer application, cultivating, spraying, seeding and more in the animal pastures of Apricot Lane as needed.

Assist in the birth of all animals across the property and may be on call at all hours of the day or night to do so.

On call as needed to conduct night visits to check on sick animals, nursing animals or animals that are left out in the pastures or orchards.

Livestock Record Keeping.

Escalate all livestock and poultry issues to Founder, John Chester.

This hourly position is structured as a 5-day/week position, 6:30 AM – 3 PM with a 1/2-hour lunch break.

Requirements

5+ years of farming experience (Preferred)

Farm Experience with Holistic Animal Husbandry (Preferred)

Farm experience with Holistic Management or Rotational Grazing.

6+ months Farm experience with Organic Animal Husbandry (Preferred)

Animal Welfare Certification (Preferred)

Tractor experience (Preferred)

Must live within 30 minutes of the Farm.

Sincere passion for livestock/poultry/animals and the land/animals/ecosystem (especially soil!).

Qualifications

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Excellent interpersonal skills: ability to effectively communicate and motivate others.

Proficient in Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, etc.) and Google Suite.

Excellent time management and organizational skills.
