Job Description:

Virginia Peninsula Community College is a two-year institution of higher education established as a part of a statewide system of community colleges. It primarily serves the residents of the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York.

The Director of Advising oversees all areas of academic advising at the college and is a senior leader in the Enrollment Management and Student Success division of the College. Advising is an essential service at Virginia Peninsula and this position is critical to the overall mission of the institution. The Director is responsible for designing, leading, training, and assessing programs and services that support student learning, as well as those that enhance the retention and persistence of students as they progress successfully towards graduation. The Director ensures students receive advising and other services necessary to achieve their educational goals, collaborates with colleagues from all divisions, works with students to remove barriers to their success, and provides support in a manner easily accessible to all.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Plans and organizes Academic Advising ensuring the unit provides high-quality support services.

Assists with creating and supporting the strategic direction of the department, executing improvement plans, and supporting cross-departmental goals.

Develops and implements an advising model that links intentional curricular choices to student goal attainment.

Oversees and implements technology platforms, such as Navigate, used in advising.

Participates on campus and college committees, as required.

Identifies opportunities to create, improve, and implement innovative services that support student success and retention goals.

Develops and implements Student Advising policies and procedures, ensuring college policy is adhered to by department staff.

Directs, plans, organizes, and provides leadership to the day-to-day operations of Academic Advising.

Provides leadership, vision, and direction for campus-wide academic success programs and initiatives, promoting a culture of undergraduate persistence and achievement.

Fosters positive energy and positive morale for the staff.

Supervises and develops professional and administrative staff.

Manages daily operations of the Advising Centers and staff, which involves recruiting, hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating peer advisors.

Works out of multiple offices where staff are located – requiring travel between work sites and active participation and supervision of multiple project areas.

Develops and manages unit budgets.

Provides leadership to collaborative projects with AA focused on academic success.

Leads efforts to increase retention and strengthen academic support services.

Develops and implements a comprehensive strategic plan for academic support and intervention programs.

Advises and counsels students regarding educational issues such as course and program selection, class scheduling, college adjustment, study habits, and career planning.

Manages the progress grade/early alert process and student success interventions. Partners with Dean of Retention and Student Success and AA VPs and Deans to develop and implement vision and ongoing assessment.

Provides leadership and guidance for the development and delivery of programs and services designed to enhance the academic success of students from orientation through graduation.

Supports the College Quality Enhancement Plan and the QEP implementation committee.

Leads academic support and intervention programs including Academic Suspensions and Third Repeats processes and student communication.

Consults with faculty, administrators, and campus partners regarding academic advising and academic support issues. Coordinates regular communication with academic deans focused on staff training, course schedule, student needs.

Perform other duties assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree in counseling, Student Personnel Services, Higher Education, or a related field.

Progressive professional work experience providing counseling and academic advising, transfer, and/or career services at a post-secondary institution.

Proven leadership and management experience in a complex organization (e.g., leading campus-wide committees and implementation of effective initiatives).

Specialized knowledge of:

Current best practices in academic advising and understanding of student development theory.

State and federal advising regulations and record-keeping requirements.

Leadership practices - training methodologies, effective communication techniques, and personnel management.

Technology practice and knowledge (record of effective use of technology for academic advising and retention).

Administration knowledge (assessment and policy related to academic advising and retention).

Skills:

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

Demonstrated leadership skills in directing and motivating teams.

Excellent public speaking and presentation skills.

Skilled in delivering exceptional customer service.

Must be able to work at all campus locations.

Work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends to fulfill the full responsibilities of the job.

Experience with:

Experience leading professional staff.

Data analysis and strategic planning.

Developing and implementing retention and graduation rate improvement initiatives.

Program evaluation and assessment.

Analysis and reviews of student information systems (scheduling, degree audit, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with Student onboarding systems, Student Information systems.

Experience in a Community College setting.
