A Day in the LifeCareers that Change Lives

In this role, you will join a world-class team of mechanical, electrical, and software engineers responsible for further development and enhancement of the globally launched Robotic Assisted Surgery platform within the Surgical Operating unit.

Medtronic’s Surgical Operating Unit is a powerful operating unit bringing together the people and product portfolio of Surgical Robotics and Surgical Innovations. With the Medtronic Mission as our North Star, we will build on our legacy of proven surgical solutions and advance the promise of robotics and digital solutions for the benefit of the customers and patients we serve. Make

your

impact by exploring a career with the world’s leading Medical Device company, striving to alleviate pain, restore health, and extend life.

A Day in The LifeAs a Principal Controls Software Engineer working at Medtronic, you will provide technical leadership in the research and development of software that supports future generations of surgical robotic systems. You will lead software teams and also work as an individual contributor to create control solutions that run on early-stage as well as released real-time embedded platforms, using embedded sensor and actuator hardware to deliver high-bandwidth, precise, and robust system behavior. This role will involve engagement with the electromechanical design of proof of concepts and early-stage prototypes – with a focus on controls and robot kinematics for de-risking concept selection. In addition, this role will involve scope and team planning for software resources and leading the software team technically during project execution.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned:

Partner with project leads, the greater software organization, systems engineering, and validation groups to scope and guide software development for early-stage prototype projects.

Leading software teams as Software technical lead in surgical robotic prototype projects.

As an individual contributor, develop and implement prototypic controls for proof-of-concepts.

In collaboration with the larger software organization, develop and implement prototype software frameworks for early-stage proof-of-concepts.

Prepare and conduct design reviews.

Support project transition into the product development phase.

Grow into an independent project lead that will manage resource, budget, and project planning needs.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree with 7 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with 5 years of relevant experience.

Nice to Have*

Demonstrated ability to lead teams in prototype software creation.

Comfort in research or early-stage product development environments, potentially unstructured / open-ended problem solving.

Experience analyzing project risks and working towards de-risking.

Proficient in use of modeling & simulation software (MATLAB/Simulink strongly preferred).

Proficient in aspects of forward/inverse kinematics, dynamics, physics of drive trains, and design and implementation of position, velocity, and torque feedback controllers.

Hands-on experience with medical/surgical devices/instruments and knowledge of clinical settings.

Communication skills, presentation skills related to diverse groups (different engineering disciplines, functional groups, leadership).

Fluency in English is required (German a plus).

Visionary ideas of where the future of medical robotics can and should go.

Experience in the implementation of advanced control algorithms, such as Cartesian impedance and admittance controls.

Experience with real-time software on microprocessor-based systems and developing software in a Linux environment.

Integrating mechanical and electrical hardware and software.

Experience in prototype-level C++ coding.

Knowledge of discrete signal processing methods and algorithms.

Experience with SAFe planning.

Experience with diverse, cross-functional teams; Geodiversity spanning an international environment is a bonus.

Ability to travel up to once per month.

Experience with software development for HUGO RAS is a plus.

Required Knowledge and ExperienceRequires mastery of a specialty area and full knowledge of industry practices, typically obtained through advanced education combined with experience. May have broad knowledge of project management. Requires a Baccalaureate degree (or for degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree which satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A)) and minimum 7 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
