The Principal Engineer, Building Systems and Components Design, reporting to the Director, R&D, is expected to be a recognized expert and a key contributor providing novel designs that create value through ease of installation and materials optimization. These designs will initially focus on our railing systems (composite, aluminum, and steel), but will expand over time to include work on decking, cladding, and exterior wall assemblies and components. You will lead the design and structural analysis of the systems and components along with their transitions to internal and external manufacturing partners. You will coordinate with the Materials and Structural Testing Group on testing to achieve the required code performance. Coordinate/fabricate 3-D models and other prototypes to demonstrate features and installation methods to the project team. The individual is a company expert for design, modeling, and analysis of these products/components, leading major new product innovations and line extensions. This individual will develop our design and modeling capabilities to provide for long-term business impact and growth.Drafting and design work of Building Systems and Components (e.g. rails, balusters, brackets, post covers, lighting components, etc.)Creation and revision of CAD models and drawings using computer software (e.g. SolidWorks)Exporting designs to digital prototyping equipment (CNC or 3-D printing) using current CAD CAM softwareReview design for manufacturability assessments with internal and external partnersParticipate in overall engineering troubleshootingAct as liaison to Manufacturing through Project ImplementationDevise new solutions to improve total installed cost/ease of installation for components and systemsBuild out and maintain Product Design library and coordinate with Engineering and IT on a unified archiveBuild out CAD/CAE/FEA internal tool set and external partners necessary to support business objectivesBe responsible for prototyping tools within R&DDevelop standardized design criteria across all product linesParticipate in brainstorming and cross-departmental meetings to ensure collaborationLead the technical review and validation of design concepts, ensuring alignment with industry standards and regulatory requirements.Collaborate with cross-functional teams including marketing, sales, engineering, operations and customer service to understand market needs and incorporate feedback into product designs.Evaluate and integrate new materials and technologies into product designs to enhance performance, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness.Develop and manage project timelines, ensuring timely delivery of design milestones and project goals.Conduct failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) and risk assessments on new and existing products to identify potential issues and implement corrective actions.Stay current with advancements in the field of building systems and components design and apply new knowledge to continuously improve product offerings.Desired Skills:Significant direct experience with Solidworks portfolio.
